Posse, there are Jeep GC rated to tow over twice the 3500 its you mentioned, and excellent fully independent suspensions to keep it all going straight. This Jeep GC suspension was designed by Mercedes, nothing like the solid axle great off-road genuine Jeeps. The Jeep name here is a marketing thing, Dodge Durango uses the same setup in a little longer wheelbase.

Nonetheless, the accident was caused by very heavy weight hung back over the back of the Airstream, it could have taken anything off the road. Proper loading matters, heavy weight near the trailer axles, light weight at the ends, at least 10% on the hitch.

Occupants, unknown. I was well ahead of the incident and there was plenty of traffic following. Backing up was not an option. But the look of the hitch going L-R-L-R in a swaying motion and the hitch was higher, had the trailer tongue above level on an unknown SUV just looked like an uncomfortable situation.

Incorrect. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a base tow rating of 5,000 lbs, and properly equipped from the factory, up to 7,400 lbs. This has been the case at least since the 2005 model year.

In fact, the JGC is an excellent tow vehicle. I used a 2015 JGC to pull my 25 FB across country....it was a pleasure to tow. The only issue is payload - it just doesn't offer enough payload capacity to allow much more than a driver, passenger, and the trailer. That's a convenience issue, not a safety issue - you have to respect the weight limits, which means you have to leave stuff home. But loaded properly, it's a safe and comfortable TV.

Jim, I was going to comment on that incorrect information but you beat me too it.

Just watched this video, while the craftsmanship is to notch and the video is really well done, I wonder how much of an issue he has created for himself. If you look at 8:18 in, it doesn't look very light and I imagine adding some high end bikes will only make it worse.

https://youtu.be/Zzpwm7fVZts

At least his tow vehicle looks like it can handle it, somewhat.

Rollover in Quebec

I'm going to guess that the receiver added 75lbs, hitch added 50lbs and 2 carbon mountain bikes added 50lbs. So that's 175lbs aft of the trailers axle. Not far off from installing lithium batteries and locating under the rear bed...

I agree with Davidson Overland: the injuries were minor, not the people.

Hi

Unless there's info on what actually *was* in the "big gray box" .... hard to tell what impact it had.

It would be nice to hear from the poor people in the TV ....

That AS should not have been pulled by a Jeep. Doubt it would have happened with 3/4 OR ONE TON TRUCK PULLING IT. Would like to know the experience of the driver and speed when towing!

There are some obvious questions about how the weight was distributed. Adding the bike rack box on the back certainly would be a factor to increased sway. The type of hitch would also tell part of the story. Mechanical failure of the Jeep or tire blow out would be possible or perhaps an animal darted out or another car cut the driver off. Inexperience could play a factor. In looking at the pictures of the road, it looks pretty straight. Maybe gusty cross winds came up.

I was not able to read all the posts but I suspect that the explanation may have been noted in one of the posts.

Opening up the ongoing debate about tow vehicles is what will happen here.

Does the Grand Cherokee have the ability to tow a 6,000 lbs trailer? I think Chrysler would say yes! What sort of effect did the bike rack have on the tongue weight making it too light to offer the ideal 15%? contributing to sway which might have lead up to the roll over. Did the driver have any sway control at the hitch?

Lots of questions on my part...

Since it’s been revived, isn’t it fresh again?
Personally, with all the new influx of RV’ers, I’m glad this topic has come up anew. In the last several months, I’ve seen some downright stupid rigs on the road, hopefully some folks can still glean something out of threads like this.

Just saying...

Plenty of good info here, still, and an opportunity for newcomers to learn, including the ability and wisdom to read all of a long thread, and to separate wheat from chaff.

A similarly long read -- and also a good learning experience IMO -- is the "Out of control sway" thread. [hot link in blue]

Happy trails,

Hi

The basic questions are still open three years later. That's pretty typical in these threads. You have a limited amount of data and a whole lot of guessing. There's never a "reveal" to show you how close the guesses came ....
