We can stop the speculations

A little detective work got me this picture from the facebook page of Komo creations. I think this is the unit involved in this accident.

Wow! Is right.

Great work Papa smurf, thanks.

Amazing that the mfg. would dare do such a thing, and recklessly put lives in danger -- not only the Airstream family but all other motorists on the road.

One of the main ideas we learned when I took an accident prevention course while employed at Uniroyal tire, was that accidents are caused. They don't just happen. This one was definitely caused by a blatant disregard for weight distribution. The tire failure might have initiated the sequence but he could have ridden that out if he had not been out of balance.

Looks like the weight of this unit is 150lbs empty.

Dimensions:

Height: 47"
Depth: 34"
Width: 72"
Weight: 150 lbs

From>http://www.ecarriershelving.com/?category_id=31

I guess if you load in 2 bikes at 45lbs each and then add in the extra bracketry your over 250 lbs. Then factor in the offset weight. Anyone good at physics?

Looks pretty much as I anticipated from the earlier pics that we saw - an accident waiting to happen with the slightest provocation. All the more so when in combination with a fairly short wheel-based tow vehicle.

An expensive lesson learned the hard way unfortunately.

Brian.

In many different threads and posts, one thing has come through clearly: accidents or crashes are rarely a single episode cause. It takes two or more factors in short time span to fully bring about the unfortunate results. Usually, we can compensate for one failure or event on the road, but even the best, most experienced drivers will seldom overcome two or more contributing events and come out without a scratch.

So we are 65 posts into this discussion and one thing is absolutely certain. We have no idea of the cause of the accident.

We have pages of speculation. Hell, the driver could have hit a moose. We just don't know.

The assumption is that the additional weight aft contributed to the accident. What about the 10 other roll-overs that did not have a "box"?

I'm thinking we have a bunch of monday-morning forensic engineers with unproven theories.

Sorry, I suspect I'll be blasted for this opinion. I'll put my firesuit on.....

Gotta say, that's some pretty solid spelunking.

As an expert armchair quarterback, I also have to say, "Wow!" Of course I can't prove any more than the rest of us that the 150+ pounds back there caused or even contributed to this particular accident, but wow. If nothing else, we'd have been worried about what the stress & strain of that load might have done to our trailer over time.

I hope that these folks don't get scared away from enjoying a new AS. However, they should get an F250 and put all of the "stuff" that would have gone in that monstrosity on tail into the bed of the truck. What a ridiculous piece of "engineering". Looks like something that should be left on the patio.
