Reserve america and state of CA

As if things were not costly enough for most people. The state of Ca. has given a sweetheart deal to Reserve America. For every booking you make online for a campsite they charge $7.50 service charge. In Calif. most state parks that offer hookups fill us fast so you can not just show up. I called several State sites to double check how to get around it and no luck if you want a guaranteed site you have to ante up.
Gov. Arnold what did you allow your govt. to do??? give more money to one person???

this system works quite well once you know how to work the system.
have you heard the state is broke?
I've used reserveamerica with great success for 3 years now.
last I heard the legislators made the laws not the governator

I booked using the system, however a private company is making lots of money and not the state. Apparently the state sold the contract to Reserve America. Similar to the hotels in our National Parks are run by Xanterra, a private company. Since these are state and federal parks the monies should be gonig to the states. Thus a sweetheart deal.

My experience last year was to telephone Reserve America. Online attempts were going to charge me res.fees for each day of stay. Forest Service campgrounds save serveral campsites in a campground to have availablity in case of reservation screw-ups. Those sites are first come first serve near the end of the day. Week days work the best. I don't know if the State Parks have this policy too.

Sure I don't like the fees, but it's the way things are now. Look at Ticketmaster if you want to get sick over fees. But the systems works fine for me, right down to being able to select which available site to book. "Sweetheart deal"? I doubt it- it probably went to the highest bidder.

It is becoming the way of the land, due to campgrounds filling to capacity. The increase in the number of campers has outstripped the available campsites in many areas. The reservation systems are one way to help. Yes they are for profit companies, but at least they didn't make one up using tax payer dollars.

FWIW NC will start using Infospherix in April '09 with it to be fully implemented by July '09. In many cases it has been requested by the people using the campgrounds. In NC many of the choice campsites get blocked out for a week or more at a time under the old system, but sit empty for all but a but a few days of that period. People do pay the full price for the time it is reserved, but is that really fair to others? Hopefully the reservation system will help mitigate some of the issues.

It's like Ticket Master. If you want to go to a concert/play, you can't just call the venue and buy tickets. Most times, you can't even go to the box office without a similar service charge.

When we were at Grand Canyon last fall one of the primary vendors of the park is supposedly closing it's doors. Primary reason, congress in it's infinite wisdom is doing as Wayne&Sam said, it goes to the highest bidder and the vendor felt it was not worth the hassle to go through the bid process and they had been in the Park for over 100 years. We have the same process here at Mesa Verde National Park. When the vendor's lease is up it goes up for bid.
I personally don't mind RA. Their terms are straight forward and face it, we are in a fee structured society. Like I've been told before, "there is no free lunch".

We have already booked 8 trips for this coming season. I think ReserveAmerica is a great thing. I don't mind paying the $7.50 to have a spot. On the other hand, what I don't like is if you have to call and talk with a live person they charge you $10.00

Hi Neil,

Happy New Year. Yes, I wanted to make reservation for Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe, when I was on line all the site showed they were handicap. I have made the mistake in the past booking one of these sites and was charged to change sites. So I decided that a simple phone call would be better. They failed to tell me talking to a live person is an additional charge of $2.50 to speak with someone.

Great Idea!!

anyone that wants to speak with me better have cash in hand!! lol

I'm off the porch!!

and another thing-- why would anyone want to give more money to the state of ca?? They don't know what to do with it anyway!!
Now they want to issue you a IOU for a state income tax refund. They attach your wages- get YOUR money up front- spend it and then want to give you an IOU.
WAKE UP PEOPLE--

rant over
