Question Reading the serial number question

Ok here goes (hopefully brief) -

Found out how to read a serial number (ie: length, assembly plant, floor plan, etc..). Question is on the Model. According to the serial number identification page we found, I = International, E = Excella, and L = Land Yacht.

The trailer we are looking at has the Land Yacht "plaque" on the side, but also has the "I" in the serial number (this trailer is a 1978). I would have thought that in the serial number it would have both letters, ie: IL for International Land Yacht.

Did Airstream make a Land Yacht/International combo??? Or is it possible that the seller had the Land Yacht "plaque" put on there?

I'm a little confused as to the Land Yacht insignia. Was Land Yacht a model or a classification?

Certain years, AS went a bit overboard in the naming of the trailers:
we have a 1974 AMBASSADOR INTERNATIONAL LAND YATCH
there was too a 1974 SOVEREIGN INTERNATIONAL LY

The VIN has only one letter for the model. The other part of the name are things like trim package, various optional things, like in ours: International as far as we can tell meant it has 2 water pressure regulators.

In 1978, in the AS list I have, I do not see a 1978 International, but that would not be the first time something weird was discovered about AS.
If the VIN says "I", and the plaque LY, you do have an International_Land Yatch.

correction: I see you have a Trade Wind. they list a 78 TW. We too have a TW_International_LY, and the VIN has a I.
That's what you have.

Thanks! I found the "model list" with the year/model name/length, etc... and printed it up.

At this point, I'm gonna have a very BIG file and need ALOT of ink cartridges to print all the info I'm getting from this site (and we haven't even bought the trailer yet!)

Thanks again!

About a year ago I found an explanation of the model number. It included a "decoding" expanation that was valid for some number of years and indicated when and where it was manufactured, length, bed type and location. I've been trying to find it again without success. It may have been in the VAC location or some other AS site.
Does anyone know where it was? Or hopefully IS?

Reading the serial number question

Greetings ElliottBartlett!

There are two serial number (VIN) decoding pdf files on the Airstream corporate site as follows:

Airstream Serial Number (VIN) Decoding Pre-1980

Airstream Serial Number (VIN) Decoding Post-1980

Good luck with your quest for information!

Kevin

That is a 31' International Trim, twin beds, 1969 built in Jackson Center. There also should be a plate on the lower left front side with the same serial number and a build date and GVW information. FWIW the 1980 and later serial numbers look more like an automotive VIN number. The dates are coded using letters of the alphabet, so you have to have the conversion table.

Aaron

Gotta watch those typo's

If you look at the sheet you have been link to you will notice it refers to only having 3 digits at the end being in the 60's so therefore it would be a 1969

I thought that "Land yatch" stood for "Coach" or "Rv" and that's all.
I also have a 1963 Safari (Land Yatch). The "Land Yatch" name seems to me always appears on a separate name plate on older models and not along the name emblem.
Am I correct? or have my observations been wrong?
