FYI William Shatner isn't an American, neither is Ryan Reynolds, Jim Carrey, Pamela Anderson, Michael J Fox, Nelly Furtado, Linda Evangelista, Seth Rogan, Ryan Gosling, Shania Twain, James Cameron, or Barrack Obama.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Cheers

As many of us need to remember, The USA government is the people. Many try to separate the people and the government but we are one.
Abraham Lincoln - Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.
The only people that run the USA are those that we vote in.
I vote every time I have the opportunity and sometimes it goes the way I like it and sometimes it doesn't. The greatest thing about this country is we change directions every 4 to 8 years.
God Bless America & Those that Protect It!

I'm very thankful as well. Thankful, not proud.

Can we all agree that Shatner's "Has Been" is one of the top 10 albums of all time?

As I travel around different countries I often wonder why Americans are so proud.
I'm certainly not proud of the way we treat our veterans.
I'm not proud of how many of my fellow citizens are homeless.
Or hungry.
Or can't afford the medicine they need.
I'm not proud of the highway system President Eisenhower started and how it's fallen into disrepair.
I'm not proud of the fact our teachers have to go on strike just to have decent funding for their classrooms.
Although I support and respect our men and women in uniform I'm not proud of how our military is used to bully smaller nations into compliance with our foreign policy.
I'm not proud of how people who look like me have to fear law enforcement in their own communities.
I could go on....
But, I raised and lowered the flag at my school back in the 1970's. I learned respect for those who sacrificed life and limb to defend the world from governments that wanted absolute allegiance to their creed.
I have served in my local government and participate in our democracy. But pride isn't exactly what I feel when I see our flag now.
If our leaders are demanding obedience at sporting events when an anthem is played I would ask if that's really what my father fought for in Korea.
I doubt it.
JMHO,
John

How about we just reserve this thread for people who are proud of America? (People who aren’t can create another thread right? )

As a Canadian, I am very happy for the good fortune that we have to be living next to America. The USA is a fantastic country. No country is perfect, but most of America’s people are caring, generous, and kind. Canadians benefit greatly due to the strong military of the USA. We owe much to America, her citizens, and her military personnel.

Heh...
Gotta luv r democracy.
Kinda reminds me of Christmas at Grandmas many years ago. She had twelve very opinionated kids, and we grandkids knew it was only a matter of time before the passionate discussions started, mostly between my uncles, but then were quickly dispelled with Grandma good naturally reminding us all of "The Rule" which we all knew was "no politics, no religion, no John Deere vs Allis Chalmers discussions"
Thats where I learned at an early age how it was possible to disagree deeply with someone, but still love them anyway.

Yup. My mom and dad bragged about cancelling one another's vote every election. To the end their political views were 180 degrees apart. I've never seen love like that in my life.

You do realize we entered both World Wars 2-3 years ahead of the Yanks right? In fact Canadians were extensively used as shock troops in both wars. Also a little tid bit of information you should know; in general, Canadian forces in Korea did not retreat; it just wasn't done.
The US benefits from a strong Canadian forces as well; just ask the current Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis what he thought when Canadian soldiers from PPCLI relieved his soldiers in Kandahar.
In fact I just met up with an ex Apache driver, but currently serving US army officer, who had nothing but praise for the professionalism of Canadian forces that he has served with over the years; (actually very jealous of the fact CF personnel can grow the greatest moustaches and beards while in service).
We may not match the US man for man, but we kick butt man on man.
Cheers

I agree. I am proud of what my grandpa, and other Americans like him did in WW2. We once were an example of how a single country could lead the whole world to a better place. We could and should still be that place. But, under current leadership, we have become a shallow, petty disappointment, not only the world but to many who call this place home. Despite that, I am hopeful for the future. Hope. I guess that’s something that is part of being an American. And the knowledge that even in the short history of our republic, every stormy night has been followed by a bright new day.

To be fair if you are going on that route then you have to take ownership of Justin Bieber too.

I'll agree with the recommendation to go camping in this great country. I'll also suggest that it's not only possible - it's REQUIRED to love this country in order to call out opportunities to do better. No point leaving...
Those complaints don't sound to me like anything but love for everything this country stands for.
Including camping.
Let's go! [emoji3]

If you haven't served and/or you don't vote then don't complain. I served with and had many friends that never returned.

I couldn't be more appreciative of your service, or sadder to know you lost friends.
We don't really seem to be understanding one another, but you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Loving America doesn’t have to involve politics. Let’s start over here. If someone doesn’t like America start an America sucks thread, or if a person thinks Canada is better then MAYBE start an O Canada post. I like seeing posts by Americans about America who express their love and respect regardless of their politics. No bitter beer faces please!! Lol

My country,
Right or wrong.
Keep what’s right,
Right what’s wrong!
It’s an old adage but a good one.
...we have a lot to make right these days.
