i'm sure it is worth some bucks, however they are leased to the power company. we have hundreds if not thousands of them on our property, i have never heard of anyone saying how much they cost.

you would not believe the combinations abailable with amp connectors, you can connect wire that is as big as your wrist down to #4 or #6 awg!

they are to line work what the automatic transmission was to the automotive world. major improvement in productivity.

53 fc, the gas is vented out of the rear cap through 2 holes. if they are plugged you get the full report of the shell scaring everyone in the area!

i won't tell you guys what we do with the shells and a common lag screw when we get bored at work!

John is correct. It is an old style inpact gun used for crimping large wire connectors. I have seen them in use and they do a really great job. Today they use adjustable battery powered electric crimpers. You can get hydraulic units but they are used mainly for industrial bench type work.

we still use them quite a bit, no one has come up with a better connector for doing hot work by hand. with the amp connector you can pick the load up with the "C" shaped part then install the wedge. there is a little bit of arcing until the shell is fired.

i'm not a big fan of crimped connections for hot work, they need to be installed with a bypass jumper that can handle the load until you get it crimped.

we have a newer tool for compression connectors that is called a Y45 tool that is hydralic and runs off the tool circuit on our trucks. it is rated at 100 tons of compression. at three feet long and around 70 lbs it is not something i use up in the air near energized lines, it is great for underground work that is deenergized. it will crimp connectors onto 1000kcm cable with ease.
