'05s will be out earlier than July. A particular dealer may not see his until then, dependent upon when he placed his order. We had an '04 Classic at last year's Midwest Forums rally which was held the second weekend of June. My 01' Safari was built in mid April of '01 and was one of the last '01's on the line.

Agreed. Model year changes in late April/mid May, so that would make sense if the unit had to travel far west.....

Here are several things I've learned recently...

1) A dealer can change an AS "in-process" coach order by a certain cut-off date.

Say you want a 22' CCD with the entertainment and awning packages but can't find a TT configured this way on any lot. If you can find a dealer with a 22' CCD order that is "in-process", he/she can change one of his/her coach orders to add your accessories if it is done by a certain date (the dealer will call AS to determine the date).

2) If you commit to buy before the dealer takes delivery of a coach from AS, you can negotiate a better price. I've found, on a 22' CCD, that I can get close to $2K shaved off their best "on-lot" offer if I am willing to take a coach yet to be delivered. I'm sure this has to do with their flooring costs, etc. Once a coach hits their lot, the cost goes up. In this case, it is always close to $2,000.

3) I spoke to AS on 2/24/04 and they report that it is running 10 - 12 weeks to produce a 22' CCD from date of order. By using the methods, above, you can reduce that to 4 - 6 weeks depending on when your dealer ordered and still get the options you desire while getting a better price...

Food for thought...

...and another thing...

It took AS Two weeks to construct our Safari...from first rivet to out the door.

I would assume any options they have parts on hand for would not be a huge problem -- anything that needs a lead time might cause them to scramble, and they might be resistant to that, being how hard they are cranking...

When they start riveting the shell is probably a week or so too late...

You have to be proactive -- contacting the mothership in JC for questions like this bear fruit much quicker than working through your sales-droid...

When we ordered ours, AS predicted the production start date within 3 days...

Very true.

When my Safari was being built in December, I took the tour afterward and talked to the production manager. He told me, "I remember your coach." Really? "Sure, you had the leather couch in yours. It was one of only two units that had the leather couch upgrade that run and we had to wait a bit for it to come in so we could install it."

Right now there is a backlog on stoves...I don't know how true this is. Once the unit goes into production the coach is tagged. Although not impossible, I don't think that changes are made once the order is placed onto the production floor.

Also to compare, before the large influx of orders, I placed my order for my '04 in Octoberish....maybe last few days of September.... the coach was at the dealer the second week of December.

My order for the Classic was also placed at the end of September. It didn't show up till mid January.

We ordered ours 10/19, and it hit the floor January 5th. We visited it at the Factory 1/19 and took delivery 1/22.

It is going to be 60 here this weekend, and we are scrambling to get it ready for a shake-down. Brake controller installed, Get a longer sewer hose and some antifreeze to put back in it, etc...

Ahhh.

I received confirmation last night that my dealer was able to alter a 22' CCD order originally placed by him on 1/30/04 to my specs. The AS factory sheet he provided me shows a project start date of 3/26/04 with an "off-line" date of 4/7/04. So, using his calculations, coach should be in-hand around 4/15 to 4/20, about 6 - 7 weeks. It looks like using this method shaved off 3 - 4 weeks.

In review, it appears that a 22' CCD is presently taking 9 weeks to completion, plus shipment to the dealer, plus dealer prep, etc.
