496 cu. in. big block

Eric,
the 8.1 equates to 496 cu. in. of fun. I remember the ole' 396 big block in late '60 Chevelles and they sure had a following. I guess Chevy felt they had to have more than the 460 Ford. I can't believe how sensitive and light the throttle is. I read a post on www.pickuptrucks.com where a guy let his wife drive his 2500HD with 8.1. She waited and waited for traffic to clear at a 2 way stop sign and when she got her chance she got on it. She smoked the tires across the entire intersection before she realized what was happening. I can sure see that.

Mileage runs 14.9 on the highway with no A/C and 65 mph. Running at 70-75 cuts her down to mid 14's. In town with A/C is either side of 10 mpg. Towing has run 12-13 mpg. Not great but worth the extra cubes.

Sweet! That's pretty good for a 496! I noticed on Chevy's website that they tended to omit that data from the engine lineup. They had MPG avail on the other smaller V8s though.

Thanks,

Eric

We had the Safari weighed by A-Weigh-We-Go during a promotion at an SOB dealer here in St. Louis. These folks weigh each wheel of your tow vehicle and your trailer. The Safari was loaded for travel, although there were no liquids in the tanks, and LP tanks were full. My '99 Chevy Express van had a full tank of gas and my wife and I were in the van as it was weighed. A/S states the unloaded weight of the 27' Safari is 5,500 lbs, GVW is 7,300 lbs.

The weight of the Safari was 6,080 lbs. Other interesting numbers. The load carried by the streetside tandem wheels, front 1,380, rear 1,350. Curb side tandem wheels, front 1,500, rear 1,100.

This is remarkable MPG for such a huge engine.
