Oh, an AS that's different

We were recently out searching for parts for our '66 Tradewind. We stopped at an 'RV Center'. We were just browsing the parts section and a sales clerk was having a phone conversation with a customer. He was providing advice for preparing his camper for a fire marshal inspection in KY. We asked another nearby clerk a question about awning hardware replacement parts. When the first clerk finished his phone conversation he made a comment suggesting that the caller had an old ('71) hunk of junk he was trying to get certified. He then asked us what model camper we needed parts for. My husband and I looked at each other and laughed and told him we were afraid to tell him the age of ours. When we said we had a 66 AS he said "oh it's an Airstream, that's different" The other clerk said "That's a collectible".
What experiences have you had in these situations? Hunk or junk or Collectible??

I have met more people who thought our '66 was new than people who knew it was vintage!

Ihave had about a 50/50 split on comments about mine. Half of them can't beleive it's that old and the other half utter the phrase"do they still make those trailers"

First off... I want that vehicle in your icon!! Suffering from major envy/jealousy!!

Secondly, if my A/S is junk then I don't want someone else's collectible! We embrace the vintageness of our trailer. I proudly proclaim that the only thing missing was the shag carpet (it was the green/olive). I mourned the loss of the tambour we had to remove....thankfully only the galley cabinet!

The age isn't the first thing they ask me about my trailer, it's "Do you want to sell it?"
In the RV park here in town, they had a rule about all trailers had to be less than ten years old, but when I said I have an Airstream, she immediately said "Oh, well that's different" and I moved in the next day....

Telling people what I am working on has opened many doors that would have other wise been closed to me. This has made the rehab work a lot easier for me.

Airstream has a healthy following with proud and dedicated owners of an extremely diverse range of trailers.

I purchased a twenty year old Airstream because it was an Airstream. I have not regretted the choice. even with having rotted flooring, multiple leaks, hours of renovations, blow outs,water pipe leaks...

I am proud to be an Airstream owner...

Hi, everytime I went to Camping World, the lady at the desk would ask me if I wanted an insurance quote; And offer a little free gift for my time. I let her do it once. She was not able to find what she wanted in her computer under travel trailer. She called someone from the main office and was told she had to type Airstream instead of travel trailer to get the quote. When she got the information, it ended up being more than four times what I pay now. Now when I go to Camping World and she doesn't remember me, and asks if I would like a free insurance quote, I simply say "I own an Airstream" and that ends the conversation.

These responses are so interesting. I have had several more experiences where people seem so "impressed" with our Airstream. I love vintage and I love quality. The Airstream is both! I'm having fun already and we are still spending money. This is gonna be good.

Along the same lines... Several years ago I inquired about renting a space in an Austin RV park and the manager (an Australian, I later learned) asked in a haughty tone: "Is your RV not more than 10 years old?"

"Suppose I had a 40 year old restored Airstream?" I asked, in response.

"Oh," he replied, "The 10 year age limit doesn't apply to silver bullets."

At that moment I knew I wanted, needed and absolutely craved an AS. Finally got one two weeks ago. Cherrio.

Our Airstream was certainly a hunk of junk when we bought it new several years ago. If it is still around 30-40 years from now maybe someone will consider it collectible.

We recently took our '77 Safari to a local fall festival and set it up as a campaign booth. You couldn't stir the crowd with a stick, many wanting to look inside. They were all impressed with the mostly original interior and wanted to "talk about the old times!"

Back in our Westfalia days we got lost on the way to Yosemite. Pulled up at a stop sign in the middle of nowhere and out of nowhere this redneck kind of guy pulls up next to me and yells out his window "get off the road hippy"

We pulled the Airstream out of the back last week and parked in the driveway for a week while making repairs, Have had 4 or 5 people stop wanting to buy it. I am afraid the the mail lady may steal it. Adios, John

i think the airstream has the aura of being the best money can buy.also the aura is that you have a more affluent crowd when dealing with the airstream owner no matter what the year the trailer is.because airstreams as they age are like pieces of artwork they usually retain alot of there value.when campers ask me why i chose airstream,my answer is for simplicity,efficiency and the towability.
