Numbers on Airstream campers

This may be a stupid questions but what do the numbers on the front and rear of Airstream campers represent???
I thought they represented the Airstream forum registration Number.
My camper has had several numbers put on and taken off.
So if my registration number here is 35654 do I place that number on the front and rear of my 69 Overlander??
And where can I buy the numbers??
Thanks folks
Dave

There are several different groups that pit numbers on the trailer. The most common are the big RED numbers which represent membership in the WBCCI. Numbers are assigned and supplied by the club.

Airforums numbers are generally BLUE, but there is no standard.

Hi Dave welcome to the forums. The numbers are registration numbers to the WBCCI. It is an Airstream owners camping club. They are not Air forums numbers.

In the below picture, the larger red number are the membership number in the Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI) and the smaller blue numbers are the Air Forums membership number. Each red star that is around the red numbers represents five years membership in WBCCI.

Were the Wally numbers ever Black????
Thanks again folks

The WBCCI number were always red. If someone did black numbers, they probably did their own for whatever reason.

My '64 Overlander was in the club from the time that it was new, and its original owners were in the club from near the beginning in the late 1950s. In those early days, the club didn't supply number decals; rather, the member was provided with his/her number and instructed to either paint or have them painted on the ends of the coach. My uncle was a local sign painter and painted the numbers on a number of coaches for the local WBCCI members during that era (including the original black numbers on my '64 Overlander). The numbers that were applied later in the 1960s following a polish and re-Plasti-Coat were black applied numbers (it has been speculated that they may have faded from red as they were an early vinyl from around 1969).

WoW - just like the military - does rank have its privileges here too?

The WBCCI numbers are used largely for identification, esepcially in a caravan or a big rally...that's how they record who is where or find you in the crowd (since all our trailers look alike pretty much). And if you are in WBCCI and have an international directory it's kinda fun to look up other members' numbers when you see them going down the road ior in a campground ... and see who they are. We don't display our numbers on the trailer but plan to put them n a piece of plexi when we want to display them at a rally, etc.... (WBCCI members without numbers on their trailers are called "baldies"...)
