Nicest campground in the northeast?

What's the nicest place you guys have stayed in the Northeast. My family still can't decide where to go for spring break. The only thing we know is that we'd rather have wooded/mountains rather than the beach.

Thanks so much for any advice, guidance

nice

Well, IMO the state parks of Va and Md are great. I have not been to one I did not like. Swallow Falls MD (western) is one of my favorites, great hiking! And not far away is Deep Creek Lake, rent a boat for a day! John

I have not been for many years, but my fav is Dolly Copp campground in New Hampshire. It is at the foot of Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range.

Nicest campground in the northeast?

What types of things are you interested in? Do you like busy campgrounds for social activities, quiet boondocking space to have solitude and a base of operations for hiking, kayaking, etc., something else?

For example or two - there's an Army COE camp in the northeast corner of CT that we stumbled on last year - it is pristine, not a ton of sites, on a dam with some hiking trails and beautiful scenery - but not close to much else (and not any mountains to climb). One of our top faves. Then there's Strawberry Hills in southern CT which is like the Manhattan of campgrounds - alive and buzzing with hundreds of campers if that's your thing. Hundreds of options - let us know what floats your boat and we'll see how we can help!

On edit - how could I forget - in VT you could even stay at the KOA near Queeche Gorge - itself a beautiful park to explore - and then take a day trip (or two) to the Calvin Coolidge Museum which was one of our favorite trips last year. Lots of campgrounds up there - KOA is just convenient and we didn't spend much time there - we were out exploring everything else :-)

We enjoyed Sparrow Pond in Waterford, PA and Crazy Horse in Littleton, NH. Nice campgrounds... several more but I canít seem to recall those that we stayed at.

If you are dry camping, our favorite spot is Shawmee Crowell State Forest. It is on Cape Cod in Sandwich, MA. This means great seafood, amazing bike riding along the Cape Cod Canal or the Sea to Shining Seas Bike Trail from Woods Hole to Falmouth, MA. And so much historical information of the early settlers - amazing!

I'd call ahead to check on conditions. Although things are starting to melt, lots of places in the Northeast have a pretty good snowpack. While the snow may be gone by spring break, the mud won't.

And the temperatures have been below zero @ night in Northern New York / Adirondack Park until just about 10 days ago. Not much different in VT, NH, or ME either. Boston made history with the amount of snowstorms & snowfall it got. One of the coldest winters in the Northeast. Spring break in Northern New York - everybody heads south for a break! Try summer or after Labor Day.

You should definitely check for opening dates for any campground in the NE. We live in northern VT and are headed south to FL mid April for spring break. The Narrows Too RV Resort near Bar Harbor, Maine is a great place right next to Acadia National Park - great hiking, biking and kayaking. Opens May 1.

Try Highland Haven

We didn't stay there but we visited on their last day last year. It's on top of a mountain and the views are fantastic! Here's a bit from their webpage:

"Nestled in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, at an elevation of 3000 feet, Virginia Highland Haven is a unique park exclusively for Airstreamers. Close to Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Roanoke the park lies in Southwest Virginia’s beautiful Floyd County between I-81 and the famed Blue Ridge Parkway and spreads across seventy-five acres of beautiful hilly terrain with open meadows, hiking trails, fruit trees and a waterfall. These features combined withthe parks elevation contribute to an unbelievable hideaway from spring through fall with warm days, cool nights, and ideal sleeping conditions. Marvelous views and spectacular sunsets can be enjoyed without mosquitoes and other pesky insects. Hummingbirds come to visit daily while deer and wild turkeys are easily sighted throughout most of the season.

Highland Haven has forty-six hard-surfaced sites with full hookups and concrete patios, a comfortable club house, and modern laundry facilities. Park members, as volunteer hosts, greet guests, arrange for a relaxed and comfortable visit as well as plan social activities."

For a state park Claytor Lake State Park near Radford and just off 81 is one of the best in Virginia. We've stayed there and it is very nice. For a mountain park try Grayson Highlands in south western Virginia. Make sure you hike the 2 1/2 miles up the mountain to see the wild ponies that, as it turns out, are pretty friendly.

Try danforth bay camping resort in freedom, New Hampshire. They are open in winter and we've had much snow so at least they'll have some sites open. At the foothills of the White mts of New Hampshire and just a hop and a skip to outlet shopping in North Conway.
