Newsweek Article On Vintage AS
The latest issue of Newsweek has a nice article on vintage AS trailers. The article is located towards the back of the mag. in the "trends" section or section of the mag. that deals with trends and such. Unfortunately no mention of airstreamforums.com when they discuss websites to access for vintage AS info. (their mistake).

The Vintage Phenomenon
I loved that article. It really underscored the reasons we bought a vintage A/S. If you want to travel in an RV but want to have even a tiny portion of style, there's little other than an Airstream that gives you the opportunity to express yourself.
The problem was put best in this article in Wired magazine:
Quote:
One irony of America's fascination with life on the road is that, while there is nothing quite as cool and romantic as the idea of striking out on the highway for unknown destinations, there is really nothing quite as uncool and unromantic as the way millions accomplish it: the RV. It's a problem of aesthetics. The interior of so-called recreational vehicles comes in two basic styles: cheap and plasticky (shag carpets, simulated wood-grain cabinetry, the unbanishable smell of fiberglass solvents) and expensive and plasticky (shag carpets, mood lighting, pastel upholstery, glass partitions etched with images of big cats - think Graceland jammed into a corridor).
|
... and add to that the fact that most popular mass-market RVs are built so cheaply it's hard to justify making them over into something you'd be proud to be seen in. Vintage Airstreams give you the platform. Most need some renovation work anyway, they are reasonably priced (for now), and the basic structure of an Airstream is so durable and timeless that it makes sense to invest a few thousand dollars to get what you want.
I think the trend of vintage sales and investment will only grow in the next decade, as people begin to see the value in the older models and the opportunity to skip the traditional junk that dominates most RV showrooms today. I only hope that we won't see wild speculation and price-gouging later -- there are already signs of it beginning with certain very popular models such as the early 1960s Bambis.

Is that true that some old units toilets opened up directly to the ground? I guess that would encourage you not to stay at one site too long!

Yes that is true - however those are very old trailers. They used to dig a "gopher hole".

Trailer Chic:Go Vintage~!
Newsweek's Go Vintage~!
Check out the most recent issue of:
Newsweek, 16 July 2003
page 61-62. (under the byline of:The Tip Sheet)
In an article by Paul Tolme:
He writes about the recent rise of the 50 and 60's Bubble and Bambi Airstream trailers among the 'baby boomers'. (As if we didn't know this)
The article touches on many aspects of why the rise in interest over the last 5 years in Vintage Airstream trailers and, to some extend, the lifestyle, has "doubled"~
The only disappointing aspect of his article that I saw was the "complete absent" of this, the largest Airstream group~!!
He made mention of the other groups on the Internet and, hopefully, those searching thru those sites will discover a venue to this one.
ciao
BTW, The lead photos shows an 63 BAMBI in a perfect setting~!
wonder if it belongs to anyone on here???

Are we the hippest cats on the planet, or what???
By the way, Shari, just how DOES someone sign up for that hip, vintage rally in Colorado that all the magazines are talking about???
I would think that a person would have to pay HUNDREDS of dollars to be included, no???

I think we owe the Newsweek gang a cup of coffee and...
...a donut, at least!
That article alone put $500 on the value of every Airstream on the planet!

article
Does anyone else who is renovating an A/S feel vindacated by this article. I don't feel as crazy...in fact I felt like a trendsetter for a few minutes!!
A friend sent us a copy saying she was impressed by our being on the leading edge of the trend!
I was also glad to hear that folks put that much money into their units...we seem to be sinking in more than we expected but then it's like a sailboat....a money hole!!!

I had a sailboat that owned me for a number of years.
Actually, depending on the construction of your boat, it's defined as a "wood" or "fiberglass" (circle one) hole in the water into which one pours money. It's not often that a sailboat hold's it value much less actually increases in value, even with rennovations.
Airstreams hold their own, and there is actually the possibility of appreciating (eventually... )
Unless you go WAAAAY 'overboard' in the money you sink in your Airstream, you'll not be sorry you did it AND you're likely to at least get your money back out after you've used it a number of years!
That IS, of course, thanks to all of those folks who are inspired by all this great press we're finally getting! (and, of course, the upward spiraling costs of new units that continue to 'buoy' up the prices of late model used units.

I sure hope you are right!!!
We had a 25' sailboat for 17 years and I remember how the upkeep was the pasttime and sailing was just an added extra!!!
