Diesel Touareg

I was visiting my family in Italy a few weeks ago and got to see the new Diesel V10. It's outstanding!! No questions about it! So silent you would never guess it's a diesel...if it weren't for the fumes smell.

I walked into a dealer to get more tech specs and we may consider ourselves lucky here.
The selling price for the new V10 diesel in Milano was $70K!!

...guess we'll have to stick with our Ford for a while.

I drove the tiptronic several times (we had a Land Rover before and I tried the Porsche's one too), for me it's the best shift. All the comfort of an automatic with the fun and control of a stick! Great.

Can't seem to catch the commercial, what channels is it running on?

Li

I'm going for a walk to take a look at that car/truck in a little while at the dealership. Hope it's still out there.

I don't buy it. The wheel base is to short and and it is only a little more the 6 feet wide. In the commercial shows a 25 or 28 foot Safari, and they are both over 8.5 feet wide. So you wolud never be able to see around it. Now don't get me wrong I like to see Airsteam in it. I also know they say it has a 7700lbs pulling power.
I just think it would be wise to try and pull the Airstream with such a small car.

I think it could be a possible contender for a 19' Bambi or a 22' International.

I agree that the width of the bigger coaches could be an issue, but for some that buy VWs, this could be the niche they've been looking for to get the best of both worlds as they see it.

ARgosy - 1

Don't misinterpret this, but what does the width of the tow vehicle have to do with the width of the trailer? Don't most people put on extension mirrors to see around the trailer. I know I do - I have the McKesh mirrors for my 300M and they are great

Regards

Yes most people do put extension mirrors on the thier tow vehical. But I have never seen them at least a foot long. and also that is way to long of a trailer for that short of a wheel base.

I agree anything over 22' should be dealt with in an appropriate way. I can seen clearly that the 300M is a poor choice for tow vehicle of 25'. First it's front drive and moreover I don't want to get into that whole can of worms this forum got into a while back. I will say that the second I saw that, I looked at the location and with no disrespect intended, that said it all. It's a pretty big thing in Canada to tow with these front drive cars.

I think the VW has some merit for a certain market. I would conisder one for my Bambi if I didn't want four wheel drive. I think the VW would make a better tow vehicle that a 300M.

A Chevy Silverado or the Ford Super Duty are only 3 inches wider in both track and width so your point doesn't make any sense. Are those to narrow also.

New VW 3 page spread in OUTSIDE Mag

I just received my Sept ed of OUTSIDE magazine and there is a three page spread, of the new Toureg. 1st page clipped version showing a beetle standing on end attached to the front end of a dual axel 26' Airstream International. On the following pages a two page spread showing the Toureg attached to the same trailer setting level in front of a modest house, with aspen trees in the yard. The ad sequence has two beautiful pictures of the Airstream and only on of the Toureg. The Airstream is not disguised in anyway. OUTSIDE is an "edgey" mag that is quite happy to tell the world what is cool and what is not, and the main audience is the gen X crowd. I guess that means we have been ahead of the curve for years now, because Airstreams are officially cool now that they have had a center spread in OUTSIDE.

I subscribed to it for many many years. I dropped it because it had become a giant advertisement for hi tech, expensive equipment in their articles. I didn't really care to read about mega buck back packs and rapelling equipment.

It also tended to cater to the idle rich youth who could fly down to Pantagonia for a hike over the weekend, and be in the French Alps the next.

Not a lot on trips we mortals could take.

This was the last issue of my current subscription, and I like you chose not to renew. I like the National Geographic Adventurer better, some of the trip info is always reachable destinations in the lwr 48.

I have just received my usual copies of the
three car mags I subscribe to. Guess what. VW has ads in each one showing off the Tourareg with a Safari trailer.

And the web site some one posted does give a good video of the commercial.

I have just traded off both my 98 Jeep and the Z71 Tahoe for a newer 2003 GMC 2500 series pickup with the Duramax diesel with the Allison 5 speed. We 'll find out how this combo does on our next trip.
