New Server

Well after 18 months of fast paced growth on our old server I finally broake down and bought a new server. I got a Dell Power Edge 400SC with a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 Chip. Since prices for accesories at Dell are way over priced, I plan on getting them from a the best priced reseller (they will still be top-of-the-line). I plan on buying 2GB more of RAM (PC3200 DDR400, fast stuff!) and four hard drives to run a RAID 1+0 setup (mirrored with 2 hot spares) so we won't ever have to worry about drives crashing like last June.

What I am going to need:
$480 - 4 x 512 MB Ram (@ $120/each)
$400 - 4 x 80 GB Drives (@ $100/each)
$100 - 1 x RAID card (@ $100)

Grand Total = $980

I plan on upgrading the system over the next few months until it meets the above specs. If anyone wants to donate to the cause, you can make a dontation through via PayPal. No more donations are being accpeted!

Our new home will be tremendously faster and will be able to accomodate tons fo growth!

Cheers,

Andy

Thanks for all your hard work Andy!

Problem:

thanks

I'm with Kimili on this one!

A PM with a P.O. Box would work.

Everybody using PayPal or other means -- Post a reply here when you do!!! We need to keep this thread repeating, showing up near the top of thread topics.

Airstreamforums has saved me much more than my contribution!

I too have tried to register on Paypal to send some $$, but even after registering etc, etc, and following all the instructions I still get "page not available". Perhaps the site has a problem today, so I'll try again tomorrow. Nick.

I was able to get right in because I've been registered. I seem to remember they go through a process to verify you and your account identity. Maybe check your personal email? I think they want you to check -- they deposit a small amount in your account, then you log back on to PayPal to report the amount and complete the registration.

Okay... here's my post. FWIW, I've never given PayPal my checking account number to be a "verified user," and never will. They have only a credit card number, which at least gives me some protection in the event of a dispute.

Their website says they'll be down tonight from 12:30AM-2:30AM for maintenance.

Here's to a faster, more reliable site!

Thumbs up

What most of you don't know is how much time and money Andy already has put into this.
And to top it of, we (the moderators) had to beat him with an aluminum stick to come forward and ask for some community support on this major upgrade.
Well, I put my money where my mouth is, because I have saved many times over because of this great resource.
Thank you, Andy!

ALTERNATIVE TO PAYPAL...PLEASE!

Just to keep this thread at the top I'll share our BAD experience with paypal

We, and 150 other people, bought an item on ebay from a seller who cashed our money through paypal and never delivered the item.
All us unfortunate customers got together on the web, created a specific forum, and tried to get our money or the item back.
We filed all the necessary forms with everyone: paypal, ebay, our credit card companies and even the PD in the seller's home town because the seller had stated to all of us, via email, that she was not able to refund our money for the time being and that she had no product to send us. She was bankrupt and invited us to sue her.
Well, you know what Paypal did? nada! It just kept our money and never refunded any of us!! They didn't even help!
Some of us were lucky and got their money back from their cc after 60 days, others from the redeeming seller and others are still waiting.
Point of the story is that if you read Paypals terms and conditions, the small type, there's very little chances you're ever going to get your money back with them in a case like ours.
THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE. USE PAYPAL AND HELP ANDY.
(WE HAVE A PERSONAL ISSUE WITH IT AND PREFER TO USE AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD TO HELP)

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far!

Thanks to all those who have generously donated so far!!!

I would like to give everyone an update, only 24 hours after making a request for donations we are already at 74% of our goal! We need $250 more and I will stop accepting money.

I should have the server tomorrow and the RAM next week. After that it will take a couple of weeks to get Linux installed and the server moved to the data center. So we are looking at moving near the end of the month or early November.

Thanks again!

Andy
