While I like to check new posts every day, lately I have been unable to do so. I was right in the middle of catching up on all posts that went back more than 24 hrs. ago and the server went down. Is there anyway short of going through each area of the forum to read those old posts I did not get to?

not bundled up like new and last 24 hours. You can, however set your user options to only show threads that have been active in the last 1,2,5,10,20 etc days.

I started a new job a few months back and have been swamped. I am eagerly awaiting the next release of the forum software. Once we upgrade, you will have even more sorting and searching features.
