I stand at the ready to go and do a first time check out of a trailer for anyone looking at a unit near Albuquerque. I would be more than willing to go 100/150mi from the git go - might go further for cause.
Have digital camera, email, CD burner capability and a pretty good nose for bullc*ap. Also follow up REALLY good on those iffy questions.
Would willingly do MH's too but would need EXTENSIVE, DETAILED info on where to look and what to look for from potential owner to have a good comfort level.
Anyone looking for assistance with thie VI experiment is welcome to contact me at:

I can cover the southeastern part of MI for XL motorhomes. My email is fdfred28@yahoo.com
I can take digital photo's of trailers, but my knowledge is very limited with trailers.
I'm a newbie living in VA who is about to go fulltime. I'm looking at a 1991 "60th Ann'y" 34' unit currently in Melbourne, FL.
Does anyone know someone who could do a pre-purchase inspection that might save me a trip??
Thanks.
Tom
Tom,
I can do the inspection for you if you like. Send me the info to my e-mail address, heartofglory1@aol.com . I have a digital camera and time on my hands.

I've already found someone to look at the '91. It showed quite well
but not nearly as nice as the owner described it. I'm sure I'll be the
same way after I live in and love mine for awhile ;o)
One concern was that some crossbraces had worn through the quarter round,
plastic trim that goes around the bottom of the trailer. My friend had not
seen this before and thought it was probably just due to vibration. But I
seem to remember reading about the cross members coming loose, especially
if thre is a problem with the floor. Does any one have experience with
this ??
Tom
PS - Since I'm now asking about maintenance, I'll post this again in the General Repair Forum.
If that's not appropriate, I would appreciate a moderator moving it. Thank you.
Tom,
The quarter round is referred to as "Banana Wrap" and it is aluminum. I have two spots on my 78 that wore through. I have had the unit for 4 years and it was that way when I bought it. I haven't had any floor problem or any other problems in that area. I haven't had the bottom off so I can't say what the problem is. I think it is just vibration. It hasn't gotten any worse and I haven't had any other areas wear through. Don't know if this helps, but I am not concerned about it.

I highly recommend this practice of having someone inspect your AS before driving across the country to pick it up. We just got burned driving from MI to FL only to find the interior was nasty. The sales guy (Bates RV in Tampa) argued that we were "overly critical" of the stained back corner (carpeting & drapes), a small tear in a cushion, a "stretched out seat on another cushion, dead bee and dirt under cushions. He told me (in writing) that the unit would be in "showroom condition". He actually defined this by saying, "Darrell, you can walk into any 2006 model (we were buying a 2004) when you get down here and won't be able to tell the difference." Well, surprise, surprise. We left extremely bummed and didn't want to buy the coach, feeling we'd been sold a bill of goods. Sure, we could have spent the extra cash to fix her up when we got home, but why? That should have all been done before we arrived. I talked with the owner a couple of days later. He sounded really ticked that we'd been treated that way but called back later in the day and seemed to be taking the salesman's side. "Well, you know we have some 2006's that can get pretty dirty just sitting on the lot. I told James not use the term 'showroom condition' any more. And, weren't you down here for Spring break anyway?" What the heck was he saying? I guess I just became the impossible customer that gave his poor salesman a bad day.
Anyway, after all this venting, I wish we'd had a real Airstreamer take a look for us. I lost a week's vacation, $500 in gas, $450 in hotel rooms, at least $300 in food, and they had $10,000 of my money as a deposit for two months. The way I figure it, I could have saved about $1,500 (the vacation time can't be replaced) if I'd had the opinion of one of ya'll.
Thanks for listening....
Lessons learned the hard way hurt! I wonder how many people have been helped by this thread on the forum? We hope that at least some parts of the vacation trip were fun and that you find an AS soon that you CAN love ~G
