Your going to have to go thru Birmingham for the best BBQ...
The worst is 'Buddy's'...don't stop at those.
We have...
Full Moon
Golden Rule
Dreamland
Costas
Old Plantation
Green Top
and almost any road side BBQ with a low dollar look will be great.
Ask for... "chopped outside"

Anything in NC
You have to stop off in NORTH Carolina and try Carolina pulled pork BBQ. White buns, cole slaw, huge helping of pork and a splash of extra BBQ sauce - Carolina of course not that yucky red stuff! Wash it all down with a cold class of SWEET southern tea.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Then, finish it off with a big chunk of pecan pie and hot coffee.

Make that RED slaw in NC! It's the best. White bun, eastern NC chopped BBQ pork, red slaw on the meat, and a good splash of sauce (NOT the ketchup based stuff)
Yummmmmmmmmmmmmm

If you go through Atlanta, you got to stop at Harold's on Old McDonough Rd. just off of the I-85/75 connector. (Use the University Avenue exit and head east and take the left fork at the third light it will be half a block on the right). It was a gas station over 50 years ago before it became a restaurant...that's how hole in the wall it is! But, they have some of the best tomato based bar-b-que I've ever had. It is served on toasted white bread with pickles. You can get it chopped or sliced with Brunswick Stew and cole slaw on the side. The tea is sweet and the waitresses,...well, the tea is sweet!
Harold's is an institution and has been for more than 50 years.

Hey Mate, Harolds is now in Jonesboro, as well. And that location has enough room to park the Airstream. Take the Hwy 54 exit off of I-75 (just south of the airport about 5-6 miles), turn right and head towards Jonesboro. Harolds is just before you get to the Hwy 138 intersection on the right. And you are correct, Sir, some of the best BBQ I've ever tasted.

According to the Food Networks, the more animated the pig on the sign is and the more clever the name of the place is...the better the BBQ!

There in a real good BBQ place in Jacksonville, Florida. The name of it is Bono's. It ia located at the Lane Avenue exit on I-10. This exit is only about 5 miles west of I-95. You would take I-10 west from I-95 to Exit 357 (Lane Avenue) Take a left at the exit ramp light and go under I-10. Go one block and take a left at the second light on Ramona Boulevard. When you make the turn, Bono's will be on the corner on your right. They are in the parking lot of a shopping center so you will have a good Airstream parking situation.
Also, as you travel through Florida, there is a chain of BBQ places called Sonny's. They are headquartered in Gainesville and are all over the state. The are real good also.

Have some tasty travels!
Some thoughts that could be useful, Jane and Michael Stern are my favorite traveling foodies, with great books, radio podcasts on splendid table , and they have a website they maintain at roadfood.com where you can zero in on regions, towns, etc. with ratings by type of food. Buen Provecho!

That restaurant is actually owned by Harold's brother. I think they use the same recipe. However, they aren't as hole in the wall as the one down town. I have used the one in Jonesboro to cater (if you want to a big city word like that) some of my "dinner parties" out in the back yard! I also buy their sauce from time to time and freeze to have on hand for family meals or other get-togethers.
There are a couple of other Harold's Bar-b-que restaurants around Atlanta also, but not as good as the original. They all belong to family members.

Sweet tea when it is done RIGHT!
Hello all -
Just wanted to say that Sweat Tea - just in Raleigh NC, and they do it RIGHT! - is the best to wash down that BBQ! Cold beer is better, but then your towing.... Might be worth the longer stop!
Well, you be the judge!
Ciao

Down here we have Sonny's, Rib City, and Mickelbob's. All very good. Sonny's is a small chain, and Rib City has three stores.

Bonos
I've eaten at Bono's - great! Large open pit that as you sit at your table you can watch the BBQ cooking.

There are Sonny's sprinkled all over the Metro-Atlanta area, too. I have seen them elsewhere. They aren't hole-in-the-wall enough for me. The table cloths are too clean.
