Memorial Service for Darol Ingalls
I am very saddened to be the bearer of this news. I know many of you had a chance to go camping with Darol, or at least get advice from him, and many wished him well on this thread, which he really appreciated. Unfortunately Darol couldn't beat the leukemia and it finally won. Darol passed away January 2nd.
I received a note from his parents today, which reads in part
"Sadly I write to let you know that Darol passed away Jan. 2nd. He entered OHSU late Christmas Eve, spent 2 days there, then to a HOspice House where he died. Seemed to have no pain, could not eat so wasted away.
Enclosed is a Memorial Service Notice for him Jan 30th. He really tried hard to get well but leukemia won out. We welcome any and all who would like to come. He enjoyed your friendships."
The Memorial Service will be January 30th, 2010 at 11:00am, Zoar Lutheran Church, 190 SW 3rd St, Canby, OR, 97013. Memorials may be sent to the Zoar Building Fund.
Personally, not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of him and hoped the battle would turn in his favor. I'd hoped we'd have many more evenings around the campfire listening to his Sven & Ollie jokes. As it is we'll have to raise a glass to him around the fire next summer.

I am so sad to hear of this. I thought of him often and was really looking forward to seeing him at a rally again and hearing more of those jokes! What a great storyteller, and so talented, too. He gave a very good fight, and my prayers are with his parents. Steph, can we use the same address we had for Darol to send a note to his parents if we can't make it to the service?

We will miss Darol! What a wonderful person he was. He entertained us at the 2 Airforum rallies we have attended. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family.

Good memories
Darol built my parents trailer. He also gave a nice presentation at one of our Oregon Unit rallies on what it is like to totally restore an airstream from ground up. He was a real treasure to our community. We will miss his wisdom on AS's and dedication to many peoples cause. God Bless

What a downer. Darol was a friend and fine company around a campfire. He was a fan of cowboy poetry and had an acid wit. Can anyone find the pic of him holding court in that huge Adirondack chair at Troutlake? Priceless.

someone here took a really great photo of darol 2 years ago.
he was standing next to his pontiac and vintage stream...
dress like james dean in jeans, white shirt sleeves rolled and raybans...
he looked like a character right out of american graffiti and was.
i have spent hours trying to find that pic in old threads but struck out.
it's somewhat like his avatar pic but with HIM in it and very very cool.
if anyone has that pic PLEASE POST IT.
there is also a funny pic with darol wearing his FUR hat (i called it the yodel'r hat)
in fact a fitting tribute to darol would be to add pics right HERE...
of him, the pontiac, the vintage streams, the POD he built, his rally or any of the other stuff with darol...
pics is good and darol (being shy) would be embarrassed but would also enjoy the photos and attention.
chris, brad k, blue pearl you guys must have some darol cam shots?
adios my friend

How about this one L&C Woogie took at Beverly Beach - I think it was the 'dress like the year of your trailer' contest

great find.
he's one bad ass looking 60s dude in that pic.
the pencil tie and horn rims are TOO MUCH.
of course darol wasn't really ANY thing like that look
except maybe in a james thurber story and walter mitty dream.
THAT is how i am gonna remember the big D...
towing and rockin' out on route 66.
cheers

So sad to hear of Darols passing. I so enjoyed our discussion around the campfire. I do have Darol and the retro pod in 3-D.

So sad to hear this news! Darol was such a good person and great Airstreamer. I will especially think of him this early spring when his daffodil bulbs bloom in my yard. I do have a little pic of Darol in his easy chair at Area 33 from a couple of years ago. Wish we were home so I could post it. He will be sorely missed.

knowing he was sort of a shy little guy, with a wry wit...
makes me laugh HARD at the image in that pic, every time it's viewed.
it is just SO funny.
of course he had an incredibly keen eye for finding old 'streams with really good structural bits...
then doing the rehabs tastefully and with care.
it would be cool to see a series of photos of the streams he did over.
his makeover of a tradewind ? is the closest i have EVER come to buying an old unit.
wishing NOW, i had purchased it.
cheers

I know, I passed on that TW too, but only because I discovered I loved my little Caravel too much to let it go - and Darol had a hand in the Caravel too. Darol did a lot of really nice restorations, not one ever left his shop until it was perfect down to the tiniest detail. One day he showed me a beautiful job he had done wiring up a new umbilical and mounted a board with connectors and everything was neatly labeled where it connected to the trailer wiring, all tucked up under the floor and soon to be sealed up in the bellypan. Even HE knew no one else would crawl under there and admire that work, but someday when they needed to, it would be there. And it was done RIGHT.

That year, as we were approaching Beverly Beach, we looked over toward the water and there in the turn off was Darol with that rig, just getting out of his car wearing that outfit. It was a perfect "vintage" shot and a great memory.

Very sad news.
I know from email exchanges with Darol before he went off line that he was getting as much out of the Airstream people he was playing with as they were getting from him. He enjoyed the get-togethers and the staying in touch a lot.
The extended Airstream family that Darol had was testament to the quality person he was.
We were intending to have some serious vintage Pontiac tow vehicle discussions as soon as we were able to meet at an event.
You just know that anyone who got so much enjoyment out of life put up one heck of a fight with this cancer.
A picture tribute here is a wonderful idea. I hope folks can dig deep and post them.
Travel safe,
Barry
