Maybe stolen Airstream

My sale of my Airstream went south and I may have to consider it stolen. I have had a friend for a couple of years. His home recently burned down and I sold him my airstream, based on a low downpayment ($500) and him making 12 following payments ($600) for a grand total of $7700.

I bought the trailer on a bill of sale, and sold it the same way.

Well, he took the trailer on Tuesday. I got confirmation the cashier's check is fake. A really good fake. His number is no longer in service, and the people who know him all are surprised, but haven't seen him since Tuesday. He has departed.

The trailer is a carefully restored, unpolished Tradewind, 25ft, all original exterior and interior, twin bed, carrying serial number L25-D5J-2916 (or maybe 2918 - it was dented there). There is a gray-painted equalizer WD hitch installed, two 40lb aluminum tanks with modern fittings, and GYMs on new axles. It carried white, 2" numbers "TX-16" in the back window, bottom center.

I have photos on a CD around here somewhere. When I locate it, I will post photos.

This wouldn't be such a loss, but I broke my leg, was laid off for months, and to save money I cancelled the insurance since it was in storage anyway.

I do not know if it is reasonable to post the name of the buyer, so I will just say he said he was from Ruidoso, NM.

If you see this trailer serial for sail on eBay or craigslist anywhere in the country, please let me know? If you see it in person, please don't approach them but contact me with a location so I can inform the police.

Thank you.

If you've not done so - I'd recommend you go ahead and file a police report.

I'm just waiting for a call back from the bank on the meaning of "invalid" when discussing a cashier's check. If it's fake, it's a crime. If it's a mistake, misread of the number, etc, it's not. I've known the guy for 18 months and he seemed very trustworthy.

Right now, a payment failure and dead phone number are all I have. Once the bank clarifies, I'll file a police report - not that that does anything these days.

Hmmmm... "house burned down" might not be an accident either if this guy is up to no good.

I suggest calling the police asap (fraud at least). He may have put licence plates on the trailer to haul it away and provided info about his residence. If the address is a dud - at least the police may have a plate number to be on the lookout for.

Good luck.

Hope it works out to a good ending for all. That there was just a number or something out of place, and the fellow should be meaning to get back to you even as we write about it.

Well your situation really sucks. Query the fire and you come up with this;

I got my reply from the bank. I'm off to file a police report.

The background was inkjet printed and the foreground was laser printed on top. It was really well done. they said the numbers were legitimate but from a real check issued several months ago, that has been used in a couple of other places too. They couldn't give me details.

I also got contact with another of his friends who is also missing property.

Looks like the guy skipped town, and maybe went back home or onto somewhere else.

Really sorry to hear of this outcome. Maybe have the local authorities in Ruidoso check on these RV parks as there are several;

also, filing a police report with the VIN# so that if he tries to get a title with the bill of sale he will not be able to, and then cant get (legal) plates...

so sorry for the loss, post pics so we can keep a lookout.

perhaps it might be covered under homeowners policy - since stolen and uninsured, maybe it can be seen as just personal property ??

Try and locate your CD and get some pictures posted here ASAP so everyone that's not exactly sure what a 25' Tradewind looks like can help to be on the lookout for you too.
