We have a 68 Tradewind with the original Magic Chef oven in excellent condition. While camping over the weekend and the need to use the oven I finally was able to light the pilot and use the oven. I have since learned the oven has 2 pilots, a constant pilot and a heater pilot. My question is...what are the proper steps for lighting the constant pilot on the Magic Chef oven? If I understand correctly some of the info I have read,after the constant pilot is lit it remains on while camping and when you need to use the oven you light the heater pilot with the constant pilot. Thanks in advance for all the help!

From what I remember from our '63, it's pretty basic. Turn the thermotat knob to pilot, push in the knob, hold it in, light the pilot with a suitable flaming device, continue holding he knob in for a minute or so, then turn the knob to the desired temp.

I don't remember seeing a pilot position on our thermostat knob,but this was my first time using the oven. I will take another look at it and see if ours has a pilot position. Many Thanks!

It isn't really clear. I think it says "off" and "pilot off".

If yours is like our '64, there is no "pilot" on the thermostat, the little "constant" pilot will always be on, so you just light it. When you turn the thermostat to the desired temp, the bigger pilot will light, and then the oven burner. There is no thermocouple so the gas will always run to the constant pilot. If you don't keep it lit, you want to turn the gas off to the range or you'll have a constant dribble of gas.

Look for the shutoff valve for the line to the oven constant pilot under the cooktop. It will be the one to the right of the oven knob ( if it is in the center like mine) and may be shut off. I always close this valve when traveling and open it when lighting the pilot. The heater pilot comes on automatically when the oven knob is switched on. You'll need a wide flathead screwdriver to open the valve.

This is the drill. Turn the gas valve from "pilot off" to "off". Light the constant pilot. When using the oven, simply turn the oven control to the temp you want and it will light the big pilot and a few moments later the main burner will come on.

When you are not using the oven at all, or when in storage etc. turn the oven control to "pilot off" and all gas flow will stop.

idroba, where is the switch located for off and pilot off? My Magic Chef only has a master shutoff valve ( oven and cooktop ) and an oven shutoff( the one I referred to.) Just wondering as many items in my rig have been "monkey'd with" prior to my ownership.

Lou, your trailer may be old enough (like mine) that it doesn't have a "pilot off". It came that way from the factory. You can turn the main valve off under the cooktop. There are screws the control the size of the pilot... ours are on the oven thermostat body. You can look at the tag on the stove, probably under the cooktop near the rear, find out the model number (like "720" or something) and google it. I found our operating manual online.

Globi64, thank you for the info. I believe you are right, as that is the way I have been using the stove/oven. The model number is not legible, but I will research further.

Others are most likely correct, your stove does not have a "pilot off" position on the main oven valve. I forgot that was a later change to Magic Chef ranges. As they have said, there is a valve under the cooktop to turn the gas off to the oven system.

We flew into Hartford,Ct. and drove to Stockbridge,Mass. several years ago, I think this was one of the most beautiful places I have had the privilege of seeing, loved the Norman Rockwell Museum. I hope to visit Vermont someday.

Falcon-N-Air, if you enjoyed the southern Berkshires, I'd highly recommend a tour through the northern portion of the county and into Vermont, should the opportunity arise. My wife and I will be spending our weekends in Wilmington, VT this summer, and can't say enough about the hospitality as well as the beauty throughout the area. God bless!
