Less complexity = fewer problems on the road

I've been reading another forum for a while where many of the posters have class A MHs or larger 5ers. I am struck by the frequency with which the more complicated systems on these rigs break down, all problems that don't exist on Airstream trailers.

- Electric steps won't extend/retract
- Air ride suspension won't air up
- Slide out won't retract, won't extend, leaks
- Ice maker doesn't make ice
- Valve extenders on dual wheels leak
- Washer/dryer combo leaves clothes wrinkled
- Rain sensor for automatic electric awning behaves badly
- Automatic leveling system doesn't
- Automatic leveling system safety is jammed and won't release the parking brake
- Generator won't start, won't generate, won't start the A/C
- Transfer switch doesn't

It is in this light that I really do appreciate having well designed manual folding steps, torsion axles that don't require compressed air, tires and wheels that can be easily handled by one person, and easy to use albeit manual awnings, leveling jacks, and ice trays.

Considering 80% of the posts on these forums are about fixing problems or improving design flaws or construction inadequacies in our airstreams, I say the opposite. Those SOBs have so much bling that when bling breaks, you can have a good time. But everything on an airstream is functional, and the only things that can go wrong generally lead to immediate discomforts of the not dry, not washing, legs crossed or can't tow variety.

I want to put on some electronic gizmo on my next airstream so IT can break, and "protect" the rest of my airstream, a bit like a sacrificial anode on a ship
