Keep older 25fb or get newer bunkhouse?

We have a 25 FB, a 6 year old and a Boykin Spaniel.
Right now, our little snuggles up with us in the bed. Getting ever tighter as he grows.
Our 25 FB is a 2006. We love her but I keep wondering about him having his own bed instead of the dinette. We hope to keep going every year till he is off to college.
Any thoughts appreciated.

A 25' trailer seems like it should be plenty big for 3 people and a pup, especially if you're not full-timing. Would have to see the floor plan, though if it's feeling tight for these particular 3 people, then you may want to upgrade. Your call of course.

I wouldn't personally want to keep converting the dinette back and forth every day, except for short weekend trips, but that might not be as big a deal to others.

We have a 7 year old. Moved from a 25 to a 30 bunk and wouldn't go back. We all sleep in the rear. I converted the front to a lounge and extended the kitchen counter to the wall. Love the 30.

Thanks guys for all the comments.
We do a lot of trAveling across America with Southern Belle. She has been 15,000 miles and we are getting ready to head out again in a few weeks. We have a lot to think about as he will continue to get bigger.

FWIW the important thing is that you are sharing the experience with your son. While it's true that he will get bigger it will not happen suddenly and you have a little time to think things thru.

Enjoy your upcoming trip!

Hi

A subtle issue, but I think significant:

With the bunk, the kid has "their own space". With the dinette, they are always waiting to have their space or about to give it up.

If you can, work this out now. Waiting a couple more years does not really save any money. They only grow up once. You *might* also want them to come back home for a visit after they go off to school or *maybe* even after that. Mine and his current other are already angling to "borrow" the 10 day old AS ...

This may be a really good life event to discuss with your son.

After all, its a financial decision, a spatial decision, a physics decision, a vehicle decision, a where will we fit decision, a taxes and insurance decision, and one with really no downside, just various upsides.

Kids need to learn that "afford it" can mean you can afford lots of things or have lots of options, but once you spend it, you can't spend it again on something else.

Hi

Here's another nasty surprise coming down the road: You child will have friends In many cases, bring those friends along makes a trip more enjoyable. The dinette may be ok for the kid and the dog. It probably will not work very well for one or two friends tagging along. Trust me, this will transition from a "family outing" process to a "group outing" ....

Does it work the same way for everybody? Certainly not. It's is the way it worked for us ...

Teenagers and trailer camping

When my kids entered the teenage years, they wanted their own space. We have 4 different tents accumulated over the years, so they got their pick. Now, if you are in the South and need airconditioning, this may not be an option.

We switched from a 25 twin to a 30 bunk just this year - as another poster already said - we wouldn't go back either, even with just our weekend and long trip usage. We hated making the bed every night, and our two kids are already starting to ask about friends coming.

Then they will tell you your truck can't pull a 30' bunk, so you need to buy something bigger.

Our 25RB has a pull out under the side lounge to make a wider front bed at the lounge, no need to drop the dinette for a single (not that dropping the dinette table is a big deal).

Stick with the 25 FB, a really nice Airstream size and layout that you like, until you absolutely can't make do any longer. Maybe that will never happen and you can put the money away in his college fund.

That's a terrific idea for full-timers who need more living space.

Actually no one has said anything about towing....but you.......

If you have any experience traveling with kid(s) in a 25 foot camper I'm sure we would all like to hear it so we can add it to our own.

I was bein serious about the tent.

Or maybe get a class b and tow a 13' scamp for the kids? See the problem with doin it til he goes to college is that he's probably gonna start to be real smelly and gross by 12 or 13 and stay that way til... well maybe forever, but at least til after college.

So I never really considered close sleeping quarters with my son after he was 8.

That's my experience anyways. If not in a tent or another trailer I'd want him in the dinette far away from where I'm sleepin. Just sayin!

Hi

We went with tents for a lot of years. When you try to push that process into 3 seasons, you deal with a lot of wet tents. Same thing in the north west pretty much any time of year Ultimately that just became more of a hassle than we could deal with. That said, the "tent for the kids" works quite well if things are reasonably dry. It worked for me as a kid.
