after spending hours pouring through old posts and reviewing the answers to my previous post in regards to choice of small trailer with a dinnette, i've concluded the following;

i'm going to focus my search on a 1960's caravel, haven't ruled out the safari yet though. i'm not married to mainting any existing layout. i'm ready for a complete renovation, new plumbing, systems, interior, axle, wheels, etc. after reading everyones renovation stories from the trailers of that period, i was very inspired. and from a practicality standpoint, airstreams from that period do need a lot of attention and i want to do it right. so i want to go into this with eyes wide open and plan the whole thing on paper as much as i can.

with that being said, does anyone have interior dimensions of a 60's caravel including, width/location of windows, placement of door, size of bath, stove, counter, spacing of cross members, exact location of wheel wells, interior height, etc. as much detail as you have. i'd like to draw up a couple of floor plan options and post them on the board for comment. one idea i had was a bed in the rear, kitchen on the street side, wet bath on the curb side (need to figure if this works dimensionally) and a dinette at the front. this is similar layout to the new 16' bambis. i've already looked through the airstream motor homes website and there wasn't really dimensions indicated.

i found a pretty good floor plan for a 60's caravel. does the 18' go from the front of the hitch all the way back to the bumber? if that's the case, i can scale everything else.

Good choice, though personally, I wouldn't mess with the layout at all. I think the Caravel has the most roomy, multi-purpose layout of all the little trailers. I wouldn't trade it for a new one. I have thought about changing it to get a full size bed I wouldn't have to fold up every morning, but now I prefer it the way it is. That way the bed is a couch when you're not actually sleeping and you have room for company to come in and sit around - best of both worlds. Globetrotters and Safaris are similar.

All Airstreams are measured bumper-to-ball, so yes, the 17+foot Caravel gives you about a 14 foot body to work with.

the effort is fantastic.. however i have only been in two caravel's and they both had two sofa's...one street side and one accross the front.. its true that they did come with a dinning table in the front but if you can't find one that would be the easiest change .... just pull out the couch and replace it with a table and their you go ... you'll have an argosy 20 that isn't painted ...if the silver look is your thing did you know you can strip and polish an argosy... yes you can..... I swear ..
