ISP connection
DSL is not available in my neck of the boondocks. I read "War and Peace" while waiting for pages to load.

How are you accessing the AirstgreamForums?
I am still slogging along with a 56 K Modem with an ISP that rarely supports connections faster than 48 K. They are over-subscribed in the town of 3,000 where I live, but we are only 22 miles from Rock Island, IL. Our cable provider refuses to offer cable-modem access, and our telephone company acts like they have never heard of DSL. I am planning to look into Direc-PC through DirecTV for installation after the first of the year.
I had expected better Internet access when I moved from rural Wisconsin to the more metropolitan area of the Illiniois/Iowa Quad Cities.

I used bi-directional satellite in Colorado. Your better off getting ISDN. Trust me on that one. Unless you download 50MB files...

We have Cable at home & DSL at the office. And as far as "surfing on Company time"...that's another reason supporting self-employment! The down side is, I was working on real work until 1am this morning! Oh well....work hard, play hard!

For now, it's dial-up. When we start full-timing, it will probably be during the "unlimited" nights and weekends at 14.4kbps on a nationwide, no roaming or long-distance charges, cell phone plan. I'll get enough minutes to hit the POP mail server every 2-3 hours or so during prime time.
Once AT&T gets a protocol other than http (i.e. POP3 and FTP) on their Prepaid Internet Service, which has local as well as 800 number dial-up (at 4 times the local number usage rate), I'll probably get that to cover those places where cell phone service is analog-only or doesn't support data over digital... not to mention to download stuff at 56K... four times the speed of the cell phone.
I remember well when my Hayes Smartmodem 300 first came out... will just have to think of it when on the cell phone.

Then the 1200 baud modems came out and we were in hog heaven! Can't wait til current cable modems and DSL are obsolete! Maurice, what about Verizon's 1X service? I know it is not everywhere, and it's expensive now. But from what I am reading, prices WILL come down. The wireless industry is disappointed that consumers are lukewarm about these new technologies, but prices are too high for the average joe. I think Sprint just lowered their data package prices. Others will follow. BTW, I have a Nextel phone and I can check my POP3 account with the phone itself. Nextel is going to come out with a Blackberry device (RIM) on their network before the end of 4Q, that will give you a nicer screen than a "regular" phone, plus a full keyboard. The device will also have voice capabilities.

Hi-speed cable thru Adelphia, typically @ 1.2 to 1.5mbytes My highest has been 3.4mbytes, when I was the only one hooked up on-line. Now that I "share" the resources, it's slower. lmao

I thought I was REALLY flying after paying $800 for Hayes 9600 with 4:1 hardware compression when they first came out! 33.6kbps to the port! I had to learn about making hardware handshaking cables 'cause Xon/Xoff wasn't fast enough at those blazing speeds!

It's mainly in major cities, so I'm not sure if it'll even be reachable at most campgrounds. The BIG drawback is that you can't get 4,000 nights and weekend minutes for $4.99/month with it.
Thanks for the suggestion, though!

internet access
I do essentially all of my online work and recreation at my office in between patients. Right now I am married to a 56 K. modem with 28 K. access. It would really be nice to have something speedier. My local phone company is offering DSL broadband but they wanted me to sign a five-year commitment for 115 bucks a month. Right now for 20 bucks a month the dial-up modem doesn't look so bad. After all, any extra money should be put towards the airstream .

Dial up at home - not used much.
T-1 at work - I'm on line all the time when I am there.
