History of trailer
Does the factory maintain files by serial number? I would like to research my '61 Safari.
Also, my trailer had numbers on the front and back. Are these put on at the factory? They look like the numbers in photos of the old world caravans.
Thanks!

Funny you should ask that ...
...we'll be doing an article on developing a trailer "history" in the first issue of Airstream Life.
The short answer is that the "numbers on front and back" are probably WBCCI numbers (big red ones) and they were applied by a previous owner.

I'm pretty sure the factory has a database of serial numbers and Airstream life is correct, the numbers on the front and back are most likely WBCCI numbers not realated to the serial number.

I have called and A/S says it does not have production and serial/club numbers available....maybe the new mag with their affiliation can get that info available for the good of all....jem

I talked to WBCCI on Friday because I have a new coach on order and wanted to research to see if my uncle's (deceased) old club number was available. They can selectively search by year by name. It appears they have a separate database for each year and they are not merged. For instance, I had the them check 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, etc. They could not query against the entire list at once. They did this while I was on the phone.
No luck but it shows they have old records.
Best regards,
X

Were the records on-line, or were they just looking through the library of old annual membership directories like we have to do?

Available Numbers
Xray,
If you know the number they can tell you immediately if it is available. I assume you do not know the number but are interested in the one your uncle had? That would be more difficult and they, or someone, would have to search old directories like you mentioned.
The WBCCI number that is currently on my Airstream is currently taken by another and was not even the number of the previous owner from whom I bought it.

Just to clarify for any newbies out there, the numbers the WBCCI can look up are the club membership numbers, not the production serial numbers. There's a little history attached to these numbers (names of prior club members) if you have access to old WBCCI membership directories.
zduke4x, we do have some access to factory records (strictly as a courtesy provided by Airstream). But I would tend to believe them when they say that the serial #/production records don't exist (in a usable format at least) since the factory's record-keeping was a bit spotty in the old days.

Davydd,
You are correct.
Thanks for the headsup.

After looking a little closer, I can now see the remnants of old "Wally Bynum Caravan" sigs under the number. Would this indicate a caravan participant?

Not necessarily. Anyone who is a member of WBCCI has a number assigned. Only way to know if the trailer was on a caravan is if they are still a member and you have the directory.
