Thumbs up Great Sand Dunes tips?

I'm heading down to the Great Sand Dunes National Monument tomorrow (Sat thru Tue) with my 17 yr old son, and I'm looking for tips and suggestions on things to do (other than the obvious). We're both active: hiking, trail running, mountain biking...whatever. Any good hot springs close by? Has anyone tried sand-surfing? We'll be staying at the Oasis RV park in the Bambi. Will any of you be there then?

Thanks in advance, Roy

I was just out there last September. Part of the 30 day odyssey. Went to the dunes after leaving Mesa Verde. Stayed in the park. Loved seeing the sunset over the dunes. Highly recommend being on the dunes at sunrise. The surrounding mountains are phenomenal. The Sangre de Christo (blood of Christ) I believe they are called.

Have fun. Don't forget the sun block!

How was the AS in the park campground? Easy enough to maneuver? Did you consider the Oasis RV Park at all? Could the FW tank be filled at the campground?

Well, dont know if you will read this before you go, but we were at the Dunes a couple years ago and there is a hot springs North of the Dunes & East of the highway. Dont have my map book here so cant give the name, but if I remember right, it is not a far drive. Also, there is an alligator farm up that way. We ended up spending all our time at the Dunes because our youngest son (12 at the time) loved running around w/the dog. We went in the Spring, so weather wasn't hot. There are some nice hiking areas (away from the Dunes) also. We stayed at the campground right at the Dunes. It was nice, altho spaces are close together and I think it can get crowded. Make sure you have that skeeter repellent too!! Hope this helps.

White Sands in southern central NM is great too! Especially for kids at heart. Don't forget your snow sleds! The only drawback is no camping. I would recommend a NM State campground about 12 m south of Alamogordo. Also cool in the area is Valley of Fires which is an extensive lava bed with an interpretive trail and the area around Ruidoso in Lincoln National Forest.

You'll have a great time....

and don't forget that eubank of this forum has an RV park at Angel Fire, NM, in mountains just outside of Taos. Now that is a beautiful drive.

The campgrounds at the park was great. Course, it was September, so it was not full. I had an excellent view of the dunes from my site. My tanks did fine. I've learned to make them last. Yes, water is available to fill the FW tank. Also, nice hiking around the campground.
