Google Map New Walking Directions

I was looking at a Google map and it appears they now give directions for walking. Just for fun I switched from car to walking, this is what I got. I could walk from Michigan to New Mexico in 22 days and 6 hours.

Walking directions are in beta.
Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths. Ya think???

Walking directions to Williamsburg, NM
1,642 mi – about 22 days 6 hours

On the positive it is ever so more direct than the car route.

In the documentary Roam Sweet Roam there was a woman who was walking across the United States with a cart a tent and her dog. Think just how fit I would be. Maybe someone could deliver the Airstream for evening stops.

That would be about a mile every 10 minutes for 12 hrs a day. I don't think I'd try it.

I wondered about the calculation George. I don't knowabout the benefit of the beta walking distance except that it is amusing thought and led me to this interesting blog.

This guy is walking from San Francisco to Massachusetts and blogging. he's got video updates too. Interesting. He walked 13 miles today and crossing the new jersey line tomorrow.

Oh no!! One particular time (almost always go that way leaving Michigan) while I was towing I stopped for gas at a truck stop along the road somewhere in Indiana and for a quick bite and to walk the dog. I had parked with the big rig trucks in the back and when I got out to walk to the building a trucker cautioned me not to spend the night there, that I was in a place even truckers feared to bed.

If you check the driving one it shows you driving nonstop at some pretty high average speeds too. I use the walking one to plot out routes to travel by bicycle. You have to take it with a grain of salt, but it gives you an idea. In some areas they have a mass transit option too.

Something funky is going on with google map directions. I usually use Map Quest. Google said by car:

Driving directions to Williamsburg, NM from Lapeer Michigan
1,750 mi – about 1 day 2 hours

Sounds right to me. If you average 70 MPH you can drive 1750 miles in 25 hours. That leaves you 1 hour for fuel, food and personal necessities.

I could do that. I'll just have to go faster to make up for the times I must go slower. And just in case I am a little pokey that day I will just get all my food when I start so as not to slow me down, maybe even get an gasoline bladder for the burb and Airstream. I have a lots of interior room available.

Death march or ultra-marathon. Your choice.
