Gen. X, Y ..., What Do You Do For Fun?

I've seen several WBCCI threads discussing pros/cons of inclusion of Base Camp owners to the club and how to entice the Generation X, Y and Z? AS owners to join up to boost declining membership.

But I'm curious how these younger members would use an Airstream, Base Camp or otherwise for their recreational enjoyment. I'd love to hear some feedback from anyone younger than 40 on how they camp (Boondocking, full hook-ups, etc.) and what they do there for fun (whitewater kayaking, hang gliding, music festivals, etc.). Any activities centered around your kids? (ATVs and motorcross, snowboarding, etc.) Seems like a Base Camp would be perfect for most of these activities.

I'm thinking as the age demographic changes for AS owners and WBCCI, that some special event rallys and maybe some caravans that would include some of these types of activities would be in order.

What are your thoughts?

Looks like you didn't get much feedback. There may not be too many of us around here. After some research, it appears that I am borderline but probably Gen Y (born in 1981).

As far as vacation activities: Mountain climbing, extended backpacking hikes, sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, fishing, rapelling, and caving are some of the activities that I have engaged in on recent vacations. I also enjoy historical sites and visiting landmarks and the information that you can learn there. I suppose that this was fostered during trips in my parents' 1969 Overlander as I was growing up.

I am currently hoping to make a trip to California this summer that will include the Grand Canyon (Yes I know it's not in Cali, but it's on the way!), LA to visit some friends, Sequia/King's Canyon NP, Yosemite NP and maybe San Francisco. My parents have said that the AS is available for the trip, but my wife is not yet convinced that we should take it.

I'm not really familiar with the WBCCI.

Born in 1974 and have owned my 25' Airstream Safari (2005) for a litle under 2 years now... married and have a five year old daughter and a 2.5 year old son, as well as a six year old yellow lab. As I surf on a regular basis, 90% of our trips have been up and down the southern California coast. The other 10% have been trips out to the Colorado River in the summer for some complete soaking time (it's usually 110 degrees out there). As I work in the entertainment industry, I'll sometimes take the rig on location, find a nearby campground and put up stakes, looking forward to coming "home" after a day of shooting.

We aim for full hook-up locations (San Elijo, Newport Dunes, Malibu, Lost Lake), but when at the beach, boondocking is no problem and fun (nothing like cool ocean breezes through the day).

Born in 72', my wife and I bought our 05' 28ft CCD in January of last year. It was love at first sight. Most of the time we are escaping for the weekend to full hook-up sites, though I still throw the ATV in the back of the truck and head out to the desert with our friends and their toy-boxes. The Stream' might get alittle dirtier then usual on those trips but they don't seem to be able to go anywhere we can't.

Born in '69. Just got my Excella about six months ago. I like motorcycles, ATVs, hunting, shooting, fishing, bicycling, electric guitars, flying airplanes (biplanes rule), and hot rod cars.

I've done tents; like travel trailers a lot better. My plan is to get my Airstream fixed up and take a six week trip summer of '07 with wifey and two kids and circumnavigate America.

Guess I'm Gen-X. What's that song??? When did Motley Crue become "Classic Rock"?

I know I'm not in the target age group, but as a late Boomer (born in '62), I could be enticed by a rally that might include a white water rafting trip or perhaps something like the Wild Cave Tour at Mammouth Cave in Kentucky, both of which are things I have done over the last several years (but before we got the Airstream). We'd just have to make sure there were alternative activites for my less adventurous other half.

I am not part of my generation I guess. Electric hook up is just about the only thing I would "need". I like to sit and read or walk the local trails. Day trips to things like "The worlds largest ball of string" or museums. I hope to camp most of the national parks west of the Mississippi. Hope this helps you information gathering....

The hubby and I are both gen-x I guess, but we have different ideas of fun. He'd prefer full hookups, with cable if possible, and dinners out at nice restaraunts, maybe some shops to go antiquing, and a theater to go see a play in the evening would be perfect. I like hiking, fishing, walking the dogs, museums (and giant balls of string, of course), and to kick back with a nice book and enjoy the quiet after a long day of playing. So we try to compromise. One thing we both agree on is that when we do get away for a few days, we like to throw away the clocks and do what we please. We hate being tied to schedules. We're very 'spur-of-the-moment', can't plan ahead.

I think it's hard to determine what generation people are and what they enjoy. Everyone's different. I know some retirees who enjoy the same things we do, and I'd hang with them anytime.

My brother and I only started this last year. Can't take the wife hiking because a 5 mile trip would turn out to be a campout.

I love anything that deals with the outdoors, kayaking, rafting, biking (trail & road), birding, stargazing, etc...

Born in 68. Not sure age has much to do with it. You are either the boondocker type, or you are not. I am not. I want concrete pads, 50 amp hookups, and a nice restaurant. No interest in camping "out there" where there is no electricity or running water. My hat's off to those of you who enjoy boondocking.

we started our Georgia Airstream Campers club to meet up with others whop like camping, campfires, sharing a meal, playing and listening to music, etc. Over the years it grew to a regular set of events that frequently get 100+ people. We get a good mix of Boomers, Gen x and young families
with dogs and kids. Some Gen y have shown up lately too.
We found that no rules, no dues, no b.s. was the way to entice folks to camp with us.
I have found a few other clubs with similar events, such as Southern Vintage Camper Friends, Chewacla Airstream Campers, and Tin Can Tourists, though they do have minimal dues.

I was born in 72 and have kids and a dog. We pretty much just like to camp. We usually try to find some place that has some thing else to do there like biking, hiking or canoeing. I have been with some car clubs in the past that got way to formal with rules and bylaws. It just sucked the fun out of everything. Now I just like to keep things simple and just meet up with people of any age that can appreciate the old and the new stuff. I hate it when people get excluded when they have something that is a work in progress. I believe that all that should be needed is an interest in Airstream to be included.

I'm older than your Dad. I go to Bluegrass Festivals, pick guitar till dawn. Go to Mountain Jams, and Farm Jams, Love to hike. Swim past youngsters tubing on the river. Music festival are a good place to meet like minded people.

My trailer is a tool. It's not my hobby. I've never been to a rally. I've only brought my trailer to one campground, because they paid us to be there.

Do what you like, have fun, collect smiles and kisses, make friends and memories.

Millennial here, born in 1984 with two young boys and millennial wife. We do a lot of boondocking in the mountains, whether we are solo or with family and friends. We also go to the beach frequently and use state parks. Most of our family including extended families have trailers; however, I am he only Airstream in the bunch.

We have dirt bike, warm water kyaks, and I am trying to teach my family all to ski with the hopes they can join me on the mountain soon. We haven't ever used the Airstream for a ski trip however.

I am an avid waterfowler and use the trailer to camp for time to time near the marshes and rivers. Although, limited in time for big game hunting we still join our various friends and families hunting parties when we can or when we have tags.

For the last two years we have made big summer trips to National Parks and this year some of the BC Provential parks. We have a new truck so we are going farther and longer this last summer. We like to hike and swim a lot on those trips.

We make the annual Oregon Waterfowl Festival and camp on the grounds of Columbia County. It is the third weekend of June and we are adding Elk hunting vendors and a calling contest to the event, son of you are a hunter and have the time come camp with us. Along with all the SOBs There is always our Overlander and also a great old couple who have to choose between three different vintage models to bring for the weekend; he also does custom sign painting that is out of this world!

We joined WBCCI late this year and haven't been able to make any of the rallies work, but I am excited about the unit's boondock challenge and also the Pendleton Roundup.

I am sorry for being late to the thread, but that's us and our Airstream. Lots of camping and fun and hardly ever full-hooks. Unless we have to go to an event at a casino, which seems to be at least once a year since my grandfather is a resident at one

2 gen Xers, though my wife is borderline millennial. We like to do nothing! Sit and read, enjoy nature. Maybe a trip to town for some dinner. Even though we live in the mountains, there's always something that needs to be done. On trips, we unwind and enjoy having nothing planned.
