Foiled by the Jack!

We're planning on leaving on vacation on Wednesday...

Went to pull the Safari out of my parents' yard tonight to bring home and finish packing. Got 'er hitched up and pulled out. Brought it around the front to the street to make the final adjustments (I wanted to move the bars up one more link), and when I went to raise the hitch to take the weight out of the bars, we found out that the manual hydraulic jack decided to pack it in. The only place to go was down.

Backed her up into a safe parking spot, and finally managed to jack the tongue up high enough with a big ol' Jack-All HD frame jack in order to un-hitch myself.

Gonna have to shop for a new hydraulic jack tomorrow, and install it. It will probably put us a day behind schedule. Oh well, I guess it could have happened at the CG in the middle of nowhere too...

First time I have heard of a manual hydraulic.

Can you describe it?

Maybe you would consider replacing with electric jack (push button control) Easy to install and they typically have a manual use feature in case of failure.

This is the modern world, maybe by 'manual', he means he has to phsycally walk over to the jack, and push the button - no remote control, you see.

Just kidding. I found that our electric jack does the same thing when it gets really cold and the grease gets hard inside, then we have to raise it manually. Maybe it just needs greased? The manual (as in book) recommends that the jack be taken apart and regreased at least once a year.

Ha! No modern conveniences for this cowboy!

The unit that was on there was called a Hi-Jack. It has a hydraulic cylinder with a little pump on the side (think of a small old style water pump) that you pump to get the unit to come up. When you want it to go down, there is a little bleed valve that you unscrew. I'm guessing the internal seals gave up the ghost. Got the new unit installed today, and I should be underway tomorrow!
