Fire safety in a trailer

How frequent are trailer fires? What are the usual causes? Do Airstream trailers have a different track record in this area than SOBs? What fire safety precautions are appropriate?

I am not sure of the fire safety record.

My personal safety practice is to replace the Fire Extinguishers (2) every other year and I install fresh battery in fire detector. My Classic has a fire exit at rear window, below that is the under bed storage door exterior. I keep an extra set of keys there incase I need to open a locked door to let someone excape from forward area.

my understanding is that the majority of RV fires begin within the electrical systems...

and problems like the ones described here may lead to these...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f37/...lks-21082.html

a/s is probably no different than other brands with regard to electrical issues,

since they same appliances, wiring, breakers and so on are used.

design however may be an area they COULD do better...

for example MANY trailers, even smaller ones now come with TWO doors and better egress.

there have been discussions around this issue previously like this one...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f353...afe-39545.html

and more general safety/escape related threads like these...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f161...ted-17997.html

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f161...lan-15084.html

and discussions related to the red cans and how to use them...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f44/...ent-34532.html

there are threads ABOUT a/s fires (around 30 or so) like these...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f317...ire-54081.html

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...eam-46861.html

there are even some FUNNY threads on these issues (safety/fire)...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f161...bel-18080.html

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f441...ire-56614.html

Interesting link on RV safety with some statistics (2002-2005 average of 3100 RV fires per year with 7 deaths).

I have seen (when I was a kid) my step dad with an axe chopping out a wall fire that was due to an electric heater that pulled alot of juice. You can tell how much current is running sometimes by feeling the power cord to an electric floor heater (it will be hot!) and that is not good because it is busy melting things and parts inside the wall where you can't see til it's too late. We always watch and moniter the amount of electric being used at one time, to let the electrical system know that we are WATCHING and CARING about it. Don't need no fires!
