Exclamation Finally!!! use your iPhone as a modem for a computer over WiFi

iPhones are amazing little machines but are severely restricted by software. In case ya'll were not aware, just last week someone came out with a super easy and reliable way to use your iPhone for all kinds of things Apple said no to - its called Spirit. Most importantly for those on the road you can now use your iPhone as a modem!!! This makes me super happy because I was seriously thinking about dropping ATT and getting the new Sprint EVO, but with iPhoneModem running I am online in my Silver Streak right now! Luckily its parked in Dallas so I have an awesome 3g connection, and browsing the internet on my iPhone is almost as fast as my broadband at home

Read this entire article if you are interested in doing this:
How To: Jailbreak Any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad - How to jailbreak - Gizmodo

the article says to use mywy for the internet connection, but after doing my own research I decided to get iPhoneModem, its $10 but totally worth it.
iPhoneModem - fast and easy sharing of iPhone's Internet connection

and viola! I read everything and followed all the instructions perfectly and the whole process went as smooth as could be. Good luck and have fun!

I don't think Jobs wanted any competition for the 3G iPad

The title of the thread begs the question. If you have wi-fi available for your phone wouldn't be available for your computer? What computer do you have that requires the iPhone to act as a modem?

I'm thinking he means cellular 3g instead of WIFI, then it makes sense. I know not being able to tether the iPhone was a problem.

I think what he means is you connect your laptop to the iPhone via wifi to share its 3g internet connection.

Just be careful of software updates...

Jailbraking iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads can open up some really nice options not normally available, like tethering (ATT restriction) on the iPhone. I've had my iPod Touch jailbroken for roughly a year now (using Black Rain) without any problems. Just make sure to be careful when it comes to software updates from Apple, or you could end up with a really expensive paper weight forcing you to have to revert the phone back to factory settings in order to get it working again and in turn possibly loosing all your data.
