Far, far, away....

Several months ago the hypothetical question was posed on the Forum: just how far would you go to purchase and pick up an Airstream. I now have my answer. 6000 miles and that does not include a flight to check it out before we dropped that bunch of money.
Finally found the one that we wanted in Yakima Washington, (couldn't have been Mobile Alabama), some 3000 miles one way from New Orleans. Flew out with the wife to Seattle first to see it. Came home and loaded up the Suburban and headed North: Dallas, Denver, Cheyenne, Boise, you get the picture. After six days out and two consumating the deal, we headed south substantially lighter in the wallet and some 54' long, with our new baby, a 96 wide body 34' LTD. Reno, Vegas, etc. for 18 days and a real education having pulled only a 25' years ago. No regrets, fabulous photo's and great memories.
So that's my answer, crazy as it may seem to some.

Terry,

Congratulations!

I don't think you're crazy at all! I envy you in the fact that you got to take a great trip with your trailer that many of us are still dreaming of (at least I am).

Enjoy it and good luck!

Post Laissez les bon temps rouler in your new Airstream!

Congratulations Terry, sounds like a great trip and a treasure too. Hope you'll consider posting great places to camp in Louisiana and Nawlins.

Happiness is Yakima in the rear-view mirror! At least that's what we used to say when we lived there

Sounds like you deserve the long-distance award, though I know Brett went a long ways for him motorhome too. I wonder who's gone the furthest to bring home that 'special' Airstream?

Does it have to have been towed to its final destination, or just acquired long distance? There are many forum friends that have purchased Airstreams here in the States, and had them shipped back to Europe.

Oh, I think shipping it would be cheating. I'd say it would have to be towed home. Though our European friends get a special award for their determination!

Please, please build that bridge from Alaska to Russia, then we will pick up our next airstream at the PO and tow it home to Germany... I guess that would bring us the towing-home-distance award LOL

Towing home the new family member must be a great experience.

Bjoern

Sidenote: I travel from the east coast to the west coast and back with my parents 21 years ago and that was one of the best experiences in my whole lifetime (well at least for the first 32 years). We had a small (12' or so) TT (maybe a Shasta or something else) and 8 weeks of time. That was great!!

I had a thousand mile trip to pick up the Excella in February, but I made it 1,750 miles taking it home to show it to everybody. The Georgia boy got snowed on and discovered it's not a good idea to wear flip-flops in the snow even if the humidity is real low and you feel warm when it's 23. (I had to glue the heel cracks shut.)

Talking

We only went about 750 miles one-way to pick up Goliath. I think Brett (thenewkid64) has got to be close to the winning mileage, though. He drove about 120 miles North of here, in South Florida, to Washington state to pick up his current motor home. When I checked, it was about a 5000 mile round trip, not counting side excursions for emergency repairs.

This is one contest I have NO WAAAY of winning...

I'm almost ashamed to admit, we only had to drive 3 miles from home to get ours!

5605 miles in June and July, 2005 to pick up the Liner in Tampa and take it to Orange, CA. Am I in first place?

Not crazy at all if you love Airstreams, since 5605 did not win guess I should have detoured to the International in Springfield and added 400 more miles. If I had only known.

I'm not going to win either....

Mine was yanked out of the woods by a tow truck, dragged 1/2 mile with a flat tire and dumped unceremoniously in my driveway
