I've been doing FB for a few months... Still learning!
I'm the Nashville, TN person in the Airstream Adventures group.
Just don't get caught up in that "gift giving" stuff and you should be okay. I got caught into all that peripheral stuff and had to delete and block stuff after I signed up for it. Sheesh...
I have more fun with Air Forums.

I just joined Facebook just to see what was going on with the Airstream Adventures group. I checked my high school group and I think I found someone I knew, but the only thing listed was his name and no photo. I clicked on his friends and there were lots of them, but none I knew. How do I get to view his profile to see if it is the person I thought it was? I don't want to "make him my friend" if it isn't the right person and I don't want to go sending a stranger email.
I did find someone I knew in college and was able to see his profile and photos just by clicking on his friends and then his photo in the list; I think that is how I got there. It seemed a little convoluted on how I got there. Anyway, I was able to see his profile right down to his political party...poor misguided fellow. 
I understand the statement about taking a while to learn to navigate, not exactly intuitive.

What you can see depends on what privacy settings someone has selected. (Settings on the top right, then choose Privacy settings). The only way to see if that is your friend is to send a message. No biggie if it's the wrong person, I get lots of emails from people around the world b/c my name is common (something I never knew until facebook came along).

I used the alias I use here on the airforums instead of my name...just habit as if it were an on-line forum I guess. Anyway, I got an email today from facebook that he had posted to my "wall" and I was able to access his wall and he is the same person I thought he was. Even though I haven't seen him since high school graduation 30 years ago I still recognized him. Of course, he has a lot of gray hair now...well, so do I. I only joined facebook to checkout the Airstream Group, but I responded to him anyway. I'm not sure if I would get into facebook...too many "stories" about cyber stalking, etc. But, I might look up a few folks to see what they are up to.
BTW, what is the "gift" giving thingie?
