But the one that concerns me was a straight-on direct hit just behind the fresh water fill… this dude must have a real arm, ‘cause it left radial spider marks out from point of impact… I’m guessing it’s not the actual AL, but the clearcoat…

Wonder if repairing is even worth it…

Sorry to hear that. Do you think it was brainless kids or someone who doesn't like your Airstream in the driveway? We have a neighbor who would love to egg Lucy, but she doesn't have the nerve. Maybe she could hire some brainless kids.

no.. neighbors are good (i've heard nightmare stories...)
we're close to a school
so every friday night, there's plenty of activity... stoopid kids, loud cars, eggs, occasional lawn job (at the school)
I think somebody just saw a new and interesting target...

Report it to the police and keep an eye on youtube! The little brats will probably post it and brag about it. You might get lucky and catch them. Hope the dents aren't too bad and can be ironed out and that the clearcoat can be repaired.

Be careful about revenge. An old "tradition" where I come from involves teenage boys hanging out of the back window of a car... swatting rural mailboxes with a baseball bat. It IS a Federal Offense, but no one ever gets caught. A man who'd had several mailboxes damaged decided to get his revenge. He built what looked like a standard mailbox, but the box was made out of 1/4 inch steel, and the wood clad post had a 2 inch steel pole inside it, mounted in cement on an heavy truck coil spring. The next kid who took a swing at the box broke his bat and both wrists, and the mailbox which leaned over then bounced back upright smashed into the car and did heavy body damage. The teenagers's parents sued the box's owner.

Back in the '70s my pickup got egged (Probably retaliation) and I wound up with a circular/oval pattern where the paint was chipped. Likely in the case of your trailer, it is just the clearcoat.

Mailbox story:
My cousin had similar problems with his rural mailbox getting bashed on a regular basis. He did the same thing with the steel plate insert inside the box, and a heavy steel pipe anchored solidly in concrete.
One night they heard the "clang" of the mailbox getting hit with a bat. In an apparent attempt to get revenge, the perp then hooked up a chain to the post and drove away - the post didn't budge. My cousin walked out there and recovered a Moto-cross dirt bike that had been in the back of the pickup and turned it over to the Sheriff.
That must have been some ride in the truck when they hit the end of the chain.

There was no forthcoming lawsuit.

I hope so too. It's sickening that in today's society criminals can sue for injuries incurred in committing a crime--and sometimes, win.

It is, in fact, illegal to build a stronger rural mail box in the county in which I live. The mail box building code specifies no heavier than a 4 x 4 wood post (or some diameter and wall thickness steel tubing--don't remember what) and a standard USPS approved rural mail box.

The rationale (and there is some justification for it) is that rural mail boxes are situated on the public right of way, and they don't want you to create an unnecessary traffic safety hazard.

Not saying I agree with it. . . but that's the way it is.

Yep - same codes here. I the past few years the MDOT (Mississippi Dept Of Transportation) have been removing these large brick mailboxes on many of the public right-of-ways, especially along state highways. They even have instructions to drill two holes in the bottom of the 4x4's above the concrete so they will snap off clean. Still, there are many over built mailboxes around. Can't get them all.

On the subject of the eggs, the enzymes in the yoke is what does the paint and clearcote damage.

My mailbox has been taken out by a few drunks, a skidding truck during a snow storm, a few snow plows,and of course the assorted twirps and punks having " fun ". Well ya see, I get my income checks in the mail, so my mailbox is very important to me. I ALWAYS have a spare mailbox. I heard a loud noise and looked outside and noticed the mailbox was on the ground, mangled and taking it's last breath. I had my new mailbox up and funtional when a car load of kids drove by. They seemed disturbed. I jestured to them that I thought that they were number one. I might have used the wrong finger. Home Depot has mailboxes for 8 bucks. No big deal.

It's not the cost of the box, it's just downright inconvenient to have to replace the box over and over again. Last time my box was disturbed, the theifs took it with them. I found it about a mile away.

after cleaning/removing the egg and shell resideue with soapy water....

try using meg's scratch-x it is gentile, but very effective on clearcoat trauma that is NOT down to bare metal...
