John...

Seriously, we are envious. The cold does get to you here after a while. Two of our favourite State parks are Watkins Glen and Allegany in New York. We try to finish of our camping season each year in October at Allegany. Beautiful country and only a 3 hour drive from Toronto.

Cool Watkins Glen

Our family went to Watkins Glen when I was about 13 years old. I have always wanted to go back. It is really beautiful.

My Dad really loved to travel around northern PA and southern NY. We were poor, so Mom slept in the car (she was short), Dad and we three brothers slept on picnic tables or the ground. We started our weekend trips as soon as WW II gas rationing ended. Tires were always a problem on out jaunts; on an average weekend Dad usually had to fix at least one flat.

One of our favorite places to go was the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania". At that time, it was really remote and untouched. We could motor around all day and never see another tourist. It was on one of those trips that we wandered up to Watkins Glen.

upstate New York

We were in Letchworth State Park a few years ago in October. With that huge gorge full of colored leaves it was fantastic. The 8th wonder of the world. When you say New York people think "city" but it actually a very big and beautiful state.

Ups and downs

It's cold tonight (30s), but we had a 87 degree day Tuesday. What a joy! The morning started foggy and cool, but by 9 AM, it was T-shirt weather. I spent the morning at my volunteer job at the Wildflower Center and actually got to sweat a little.

No need to wait til August, you can start in May.
Need any help in the summer, like scraping rust or cleaning windows?

Great Day Today!

-1°F here this morning. No flys or mosquitos to swat. No sweat to wipe off my brow. Cars and trucks are nice and cool inside. Don't have to mow the lawn, does it get any better?

We sure had the cold weather last week. It has been a long time since I have seen it get down to 3 degrees with a windchill factor of well below zero. It is to get into the mid 50's this weekend and that is just fine with me.

Fun In The Sun

Ho hum, just another glorious, perfectly clear blue sky day, lounging around the pool slapping on lotion in sunny Florida. Think I'll go pick some fresh oranges and have a cooling poolside drink.

It's difficult, but someone has to do it!!

You sure suffer when the temp goes below 70F huh.

We're having a hot spell here in Winnipeg. It's -5C. The main roads are all slop with the salt.

I envy you having to put up with the heat.

Where my A/S is stored (500 miles north) is -43C tonight.

Can you hear me now?

OK, where are the reports of the fantastic weather down in the great country of Texas now? What's the snow/ice report from YOU now? We only got a dusting. Honestly, take it easy and drive safe down there. I heard this morning that there were areas that got a foot or more of snow and ice in the southern plains. Hope everyone is fairing well.

Not sure where Pahaska ( the thread starter?) is hangin' out today but if he is any place near to me he will be eating crow! Hard to believe but Sunday I was outside in my tee shirt scrubbing down the awning on my Overlander. The roads here are about as icy as I have ever seen them. A sand truck turned over just up the road from my house. At least I still have electricity.

Austin's temperatures plummeted below freezing about 3 p.m. Monday, less than 24 hours after reaching a high of 78 degrees.
That's only 50 degrees. We lost power for hours yesterday. Had to fire up the generator and eat supper in the toasty airstream.

Pahaska is at an Airstream Rally in Zavalla, Tx. I bet they are chipping away on their Airstreams with icepicks this am.

In three day's it will all be gone down there. That's proably the last bad storm of the season.
Saturday I was getting hot in a T-Shirt welding in patch pannels on a jeep my club will be raffling in a couple months.

So when do you put up the snow blower? April or May?

I have license to make that comment being a EX Michigander LOL. I rememeber wearing a Ski jacket at a lake party at Cass Lake on..........JULY 4th!

It was 2 degrees when I left for work this morning. We have had real mild winters lately and not much snow to speak of, compared to what we used to get.

Toaster, where did you used to live? The Lake Orion area?

I was Born in Detroit at Waren General. Grew up in Troy till 79 when My dad transfered down to Atlanta. Lived at East Long Lake Estates (no lake within miles, there was a pond at Sylvan Glenn golf courst up the road ) I think that was Long lake and John R (8mile?). Been a long while since I lived there. My Grandmother lived in Livonia behind Wonderland mall. I have an Aunt and Uncle in that area as well and another Aunt out Ann Arbor Trail a good ways almost to Ann Arbor.

Kid I grew up down the street folks (Deikow (sp)) had a lake house on Cass and my parrents have a Friend (LePan) that lived on Cass as well so as a result I made it out there pretty often.

Yeah it has. I was up there a couple years ago and had a chance to drive over to the old hood and look around. Some stuff is still familure. I was sad to see the A&W stand on Rochester closed and so delapidated. I had planned on having lunch there.
The open fields back there that I played in as a kid either had neighbor hoods sitting on them or were converted to park area. THere use to be this huge oak tree back behind the houses that use to be accross from the golf course. There was a old still up under that tree LOL. When I was 10 I fell back there and cut my hand on a broken moon shine jug.
Didn't have time to hike back there to see if that tree was still there but I think it's now in the middle of a neighborhood. On the corner of Long lake and Rochester use to be an old Service station with a coke machine that would sell you a 12 ounce glass bottle coke for 25cents.
Yep, time does change things. It's still a small world though.
