Disney-MGM Studios

We just returned from a family vacation at Walt Disney World in Orlando (flying, no trailer). There are two Airstream trailers at MGM Studios. I have attached photos. The larger trailer is unique in that it has a door on both the curb side and the street side... both doors look factory installed. It was not possible to see into the interiors. Does anyone know the history of these?

Just to hazard a guess, I'd guess they couldn't have too much history behind them as both are wide-body era... however, it's interesting that the one that shows the tongue doesn't have tanks, and the one with the blue/black band has a square rear window rather than radiussed, and that it has recessed round taillights. I wonder where those came from? Perhaps I'm just showing my ignorance of the later model amenities...

My guess is that Disney bought these as empty shells, and were never outfitted/considered for use on the road. I'd imagine that Disney has fitted them for whatever purpose they're currently serving, and will most likely never leave Disney property.

Alas, Airstreams that will never know the open road.. (sniff)

They are used as dressing rooms and rest areas for the characters while in costume on the MGM lot/park. Many times there will be a character meet and greet under the awning for pictures and autographs.

Wow, in October we were at Disney for 9 days, 3 of them a Camp Wilderness. We only did a half day at MGM, and did not see the Airstreams.

We are going back in February (without our trailer) and we will be on the lookout for them.

That's funny, I was going to put up similar pictures, as my wife and I were also at MGM earlier this month. The first thing we both said when we spotted them was "Hey, an Airstream!!".

They are located on "Mickey Avenue", IIRC.

Also note that Airstream has a commercial division where you can buy trailers, made to order. If I remember right when I was up at Jackson Center in 2001, that facility was across the street from the service center. It wouldn't surprise me if these came from there.

There is also one at Disney's Animal Kingdom in DinoLand. (I don't have a photo).

California Adventure

Here is a picture of an Airstream sitting on the black lot section of California Adventure in Anaheim. Interestingly, the Airstream letters have been removed from the front and back as well as the Zip Dee logo on the awning, also there is no serial number plate although the date of manufacture and gross weight plate is still there.

This thread is funny because we were there last year and I spotted each of the airstreams mentioned. Like someone said the MGM airstreams are used as dressing rooms and the airstream at Animal Kingdom is an older model tricked out as a dinner, I think.
Now that I have an airstream I look for them everywhere. There is one a few miles from my house that has the words "sugar lump" on it. One of these days I'll stop and ask about it. I have a 2005 but as time goes on I am more interested in getting an older model. I'm just not sure if I can handle a restoration.
