The nickname "Gringo" is a derogatory name along the Border....not a nice thing to be called or call some one. It's like Juero.

since it's what the Mexican Army called the defenders of the Alamo, I wear it with pride. Its like being called ugly by a frog.

Back in the 90's I started playing online WWII combat flight sims. Don't remember what moniker I started with. In one session a guy that went by the name of 'Yank' who had actually been a fighter pilot during WWII dubbed me 'Jinkers' - as in "quit jinking around so I can shoot your arse" - name stuck and I'm still using it.

My wife and I came up with Silverbee since I am a beekeeper and the silver part was a given.

I had always read "gringo" came from the 19th century song "Green Grow the Lilacs", but the term goes back to the 18th century and may come from the Spanish word for Greek, "griego". So when we say "that's Greek to me", somehow that may have gotten transformed to mean "people who speak a language I don't understand", that is, Americans. "Griego" is not easily changed to "gringo", but perhaps that came from Mexicans who were speakers of Indian languages and didn't speak Spanish well.

I thought I had replied to this thread long ago but perhaps not.
USN 1972 La Maddelena, Sardinia, Italy.
Spent a year of isolated duty there.
It was pretty rustic. Just a ship tied up to a solitary pier.
Once a month we'd get replenishment and there would always be beer.
Carling's Black Label - warm, straight off the pallet.
My buddies and I - sitting on the rocks or laying in the dirt, scrapping and fighting and yucking it up like dogs.
We were Big, Bad, Black, Devil, Honky, Super, Gusto, Smart and a few others.
I was Ultra dog.
I'm still in touch with a couple of those guys. Get a phone call a few times a year looking for the Ultra Dog.
40 years.
My oh my.

Well thanks for that. ALways happy to learn something new unless it's painful.

I just recently learned one of my favorite quotes has been misattributed for years throughout the internet. You know the one about "in 20 years you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did.."? All this time I believed it when I read that Mark Twain ( Clemens) wrote that. He didn't.

Now as for Gringo..whether someone else considers it derogatory or not doesn't matter to me. It's my nickname, I fit the description, and while I know it would be politically correct to whine and say I was offended, I'm not. I'm a gringo. Pure and simple. Let em sneer and insinuate. I laugh. Truth be known, I'm also a honky.

Now, when you say "Americans".. are you referring to North Americans, as in Canadians and Mexicans? Central Americans, as in Costa Ricans or Panamanians? South Americans, as in Chileans or Guyanese? Just curious...the term "American" covers a whole lot of nationalities...

Hey how's the weather in CO? Heading to Fort Collins tomorrow...

I am an avid online gamer. People online form teams called "clans"... I am good enough at the urban warfare games I play to declare that I am a "One Man Clan"... There is no room for modesty in these games!

I was told that "gringo" was a name given by Mexican people to US Army soldiers in reference to their army green fatigues. Apparently the Mexicans didn't welcome the presence of the US soldiers. Speaking very little English they would urge them, "Green Go Home!!", thus the words "green" and "go" were combined as "Gringo" in referring to unwanted white people.

When we got our moho we liked the "Land Yacht" appellation and were searching (mentally) for a nickname for the rig. Anderea connected "land" with "terra," so that became the nickname for the rig, and the license plate as well: "TERRA YT"
