Rivet Community karma system - Discussions

This thread is for discussing the community karma system from this thread:
Community karma system info - Overview & FAQs
Quote:
A member's "influence or reputation power" is based on the following formula:
- 1 point for each year of membership
- 1 point for each 250 posts
- 1 point for every 50 karma points you earn

The amount of karma you earn (or loose) is based on the "influence or reputation power" of the person giving you feedback. So if a member has an "influence or reputation power" of 8 and they give you good karma then your karma increases by 8 points.

Here are other rules
  • You can only give 10 people karma per day
  • You have to give 10 different people karma before you can give the same member karma again
  • All members have 10 karma points by default
  • If a member has less then 5 karma points their "karma hits" do not count towards any other members until they get their karma back above 5.
  • A member must post at least once before their "karma hits" count toward other. So if a member has never posted, they can still leave karma but it wont have any effect on the user.
  • Questions and answers from this discussion will be added to the closed post above so we can continually evolve that post to answer as many questions in one place....

Ok, this is a bit confusing to me!

First, where can we see the calculation of different member's "influence or reputation power?" Do we just see our own (where?) or can we see everyone's rating for this?

Does this mean that if you don't earn karma that you can't give away anymore after you use up your initial 10 points? Or do you automatically have 10 points to give away each day?

Also, since we all start below 5 points (thus nobody has counting karma points), it doesn't appear that there is any way that anyone can accumulate enough karma points to give karma points. This leaves me puzzled.

Thanks to anyone who can set me straight!

Mary

"One"

It actually equals one, but I too had a hard time figuring out the Karma formula. Yes, I will be playing around with the Karma tool. Can you tell if people are giving you good or bad Karma - a Karma history if you will?

You should be able to check it in the UserCP ~ if not now, soon.

Seems simple enough

When you're reading a good post, give 'em some karma. Some people work very hard keeping threads alive, giving advice, etc. Don't know if I want to give anyone bad karma seems kinda mean spirited. The button is underneath the poster's info on the left. I did it this morning and it was pretty painless. Don't know how you check on your karma status and don't particularly care, I'm not someone who needs to keep score.

You can see what you have recieved Karma for, but not who gave you the Karma, in your user CP

Actually if I read the first post correctly, since nobody has any karma points to start with, then nobody has the sufficient 5 points earned to be able to give away karma points that matter. So, no matter how many you give away, the system can't get started.

Right?

Mary

Guess that's one of the settings that is different for the mods. It's probably a good thing so members don't give or take karma on just a retaliatory basis.

No, everybody starts with 10 points...

You can leave a comment with your karma addition or subtraction and I suppose until you can see who left it - you could include your user name in the comment.

That's much better, I think I starting to get it. Is this how it works?
  • I start with 10 points
  • I give away 1 point to "Fred." My balance is 9. I cannot give any more to Fred until I've given away 9 more karma points to other people (total 10).
  • I give away 4 more points. My balance is 5. I can give away the other 5 points, but it won't matter until I earn more points myself.
  • I give 1 point to "Agatha." My balance is 4, but this won't count until I earn more points myself.
  • I earn a point. My balance is 5. Agatha's point counts.
  • I give away 5 more points. My balance is 0. I cannot give away any more points.
  • I earn 1 more point. I have a balance of 1. I can give it to Fred, but it won't count for points until I earn 5 more points myself.

So, do I get it?

Mary

No, you don't lose points by giving them away...but you can only give 10 away, per day to different people. You can't give (or take away) karma to the same person over and over...only once per 10 points given. Only others can take karma away from you...kinda like feedback on ebay, you don't lose points by giving them. Your 'power' determines the value of your karma...if you have been around awhile, posted alot or accumulated a bunch of power your karma counts more. If you are a newbie or have negative karma based on your own posts and karma received, your karma doesn't count as much. Make sense?

Is Karma also earned by giving? Seems that giving might also create Karma in the "real world" although that would generally be because someone knew you were giving them positive "Karma".

No, you don't get it by giving it...it's that 'Random act of kindness" thing. What goes around, comes around ~

If you heat your sweetest posts in a pan, will they "karmelize"?
