Capetown to Cairo Unknow Airstream

I'm watching the Capetown to Cairo video that came as part of Wanderlust DVD. First I have to say that the video is excellent. It goes far in depicting the amazing adventure those who participated enjoyed.

I'm up to the part where the Caravan crosses the Nubian Desert - famous footage of 36 trailers crossing the desert side-by-side. In that scene I spotted a previously unknown to me Airstream as shown here...

I've seen the 60's Oldsmobile/Airstreamr rear, but never this one (GMC?). Anyone familiar with the history of this rig. Is it a one-off?

a larger photo can be seen here.

Funny you should ask...

Dave, I was just googling for info on my black water tank and bumped into a page about the photographer on the Capetown to Cairo trip. Then I logged in here for the first time in months and saw your question. Here is the relevant part of the article about the photographer:

>He doesn't recall being daunted by the assignment. What did make him a little nervous was the idea of driving across the continent. "But the Airstream people took care of that," he says. "They built--what would you call it today? A recreational vehicle?--equipped with everything I could need. It had all sorts of gas tanks so you could go miles and miles without stopping. They even built a special compartment around the water tank where I could store my film and keep it cool."

I think your mystery vehicle is none other than the photographer's custome RV!

I don't recall if we are allowed to post urls here, but hopefully this will work:

AirstreamForums is an amazing place. Background info provided on an obscure Airstream within minutes. Ya gotta love this place.

Thanks for coming to the rescue Ray!

My pleasure. The serendipity of my seeing your question and the photo only minutes after reading about the vehicle were fairly interesting. Thanks for letting me see what it looked like!
