Cades Cove Question

Can anyone give me an idea what the roads are like to Cades Cove if you come in from the North through Knoxville and take US129 to US321 in particular.

We Normally go to Elkmont campground and come in from Pigeon Forge on the Bypass but the trip planner says better to take the above route to Cades Cove.

We are pulling a 25 classic and don't need any extra excitement as we generally supply that ourselves.

Cades Cove roads

US 321 is basicly passable to a 25 ft TT. The road has a bad switchback about 3 miles out of Townend heading toward Pigeon Forge, but while I was there last week, I saw several 5th wheelers negoiate it. The roads from Townsend to the campground is pretty good but it has a 35 mph limit on it. You need to park your rig at the campground [20 bucks a nite and no hookups] The road throug Cades Cove is not for trailers.

Thanks Minuet7.3,

I have traveled US321 towards Pigeon Forge, but I am interested in what it looks like if you travel in the opposite direction via US321 and US129 to Knoxville.

Us321

US321 goin bac toward Knoxville is an excellent road mostly mutilane with several stoplite and speed limits, not an interstate, but easy traveling with a rig.

From Knoxville to Cades Cove via 129South to 321 is no problem at all. Much easier than the Pigeon Forge route. I'm local. PM me for our phone number if you have any problems.

Thumbs up Great thread thanks for posting it!

Have a great camping trip at Elkmont! We love that place! The grocery store in Townsend is really nice and reasonable too. Their deli had some great fried chicken for picnics...

I think we'll try your suggested route next time we go down, Pigeon Forge is sort of hairy to tow in with all the traffic and stop and go business. Seems to shake things up a bit in the trailer not to mention the driver's nerves.

We are looking forward to going back to Cades Cove and riding bikes around it again, maybe when the leaves turn.
