CA DMV Reg. Fees

I am so stoked!!! I just got back from registering my new 16' CCD and I expected to be taken to the cleaners with fees. But since I am 16' or under, in California I get a permanent trailer license and only have to renew every 5 years. $20 for the first 5 years and then $10 every 5 years there after. Had I been over 16' I would have had to pay about $700 for the first year and a little less for each subsequent year based on the value of the trailer. Jamie

When I registered my 2001 Bambi (19') in California, I paid something less than $125, and most recent is $64.00

I bought a 40 year old trailer, for probably a tenth of the purchase price of yours, and got hit with a $300 bill!!

All because mine is bigger than yours????!!! (insert obscure reference to "Otter" from Animal house here).

Next time, I'll have to buy 2 sixteen footers, I guess!!

Just licensed my '04 Bambi and license/luxury taxes cam to $667.00!

Maybe next year I'll get a P.O. Box in California and license it out there

We pay a yearly license fee just like cars, based, I think, on the weight of the trailer. It isn't too bad at about $60 a year. Some counties are a bit higher since they can charge certain fees such as bridge fees.

What muddys the water is the fact at the last election a poorly worded constittutional amendment that was supposed to exempt RVs from property tax actually enabled a property tax. In other words, Rvs get double taxed. Most counties (including mine) aren not levying the tax, but a handful of counties are taxing and adding big penalties when the owners refuse to pay. We are supposed to get a chance to vote on a reworded amendment this fall that should straighten the matter out.

Just wait for your next registration bill. It will be times 3 thanks to California's budget woos. But this forum is a happy place so I won't get started... Today was a beautiful day on the North Coast. High of 68 degrees and nice shoulder high waves out of the northwest with only 3 of us out in the water.

Sure seems to me I remember something about "of the people, by the people, for the people." I guess when poor wording goes in favor of collecting taxes an ancient document goes by the wayside.

Apparently,just a few counties saw the goof as a real easy way out of their post-9/11 budget woes. I think it is only 4 or 5 counties that are currently levying the tax. Fortunately, I live in a county (Hays) with a good attitude toward its residents.

Texas has a totally screwed up government in that just about every little change is a constitutional amendment. The constitution must be about 4 feet thick by now. There has been some movement toward rewriting it.

It was repealed ... and then maybe it wasn't.

The counties that are levying the tax claim that the repeal was invalid since it can't override a public vote. They are still plowing ahead to collect the tax and at least one county claims that at least during the time between the vote and the repeal, the tax is valid. The bad part is that several owners have been hit with tax liens and may lose their Rvs. There was a big report on it on the TV news about 3 nights back and they showed some of the tax bills with big penalties and a tax lien. they also had a county tax collector claiming that the tax was still valid.

There is little doubt that it will go away, but for now there is a whole lot of confusion.
