Depends on what kind of bugs; no one repellent repels every kind. Here's what I found that seems to work for me…
Ticks, chiggers - permethrin on your clothing, including socks and shoes.
Deerflies and other flies - DEET sprayed on your skin.
Mosquitoes - Thermacells.
Wasps - Raid wasp spray (also repels ants if sprayed on your patio mat).
Ants - Comet cleanser (contains borax, blue color allows you to tell if it has washed away and you need to reapply).
In-laws - lots of garlic, wolfsbane, belladonna, take your pick.
Kids - tales of the good ol' days.
