Buccaneer State Park... what did you think?

Hi! We are planning a Spring trip to Mississippi and I came across this state park... they have availability but I didn’t see many reviews online. If you’ve stayed there can you let me know what you think? Or I’d take other gulf coast reco close to daytrips to New Orleans and Biloxi. Thanks for the help!

I have been there many times. They have a family Water park and a casino a mile down the road. I always stay in the front section right on the water.

I've stayed at Buccaneer State Park twice before, once in the front section where there are no trees due to the storm surges of many Gulf hurricanes, and once in the back section where there are trees that have resisted the summer/fall storms.

The State Park has full hookups (water/electric/sewer, but no cable). WiFi is adequate during the week but overloaded on weekends.

Of the two, the front section is preferable to most people, being somewhat farther away from the railroad tracks that pass right behind the park. The rear section is subject to train whistles all night that are guaranteed to disturb your sleep unless you tranq yourself first. You still hear the train whistles in the front section, but with some attenuation for increased distance, so they're not as disruptive.

As noted by AWCHIEF, a mile west is the Silver Slipper Casino in Waveland. Even if you don't gamble, they have a decent (but not outstanding) all-you-can-eat buffet. Somewhat farther away to the west, you've got the many and varied attractions of Gulfport and Biloxi.

I had a very enjoyable camping experience at Buccaneer. I stayed in the loop in back with the most trees - I think it was Long John Silver. The train whistles didn't bother me but I'm used to hearing them at home. There is a pool in campground and water park in front but note that no pools will be open until Memorial Day unless they've changed policy. I recommend Trapani's in nearby old town Bay St Louis for amazing stuffed trout. If you have kids, consider the Infinity space center next to Louisiana/Mississippi welcome center.

We camped at Buccaneer State Park in Mississippi in April of 2016, so some my our observations may have changed since then. Disclaimer, I usually hesitate to publicly provide my opinion of campground and campsites, as my criteria may widely differ from those of others. Length of stay, time of year, hookup needs, privacy, camping in groups as well as other criteria even impact my own choices

There are many loops to choose from, as it has 276 campsites. While others have referred to Front and Back, I tend to look at the layout as Front (Seven Seas, Port and Dock), Back (Treasure Cove and Royal Cay) and Middle (the rest). You can download both a Black and White as well as Colored park map from the park website which shows the campgrounds; the Colored map calls out the individual campsites by number. I also get a good sense of a park by looking at it using Google Earth.

The infrastructure is very new, due to the park being extremely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Because of this damage, there is very little in the way of shade outside of Treasure Cove loop. And there is no vegetation separating the campsites. If privacy is a high priority, your best bet is the outside ends of Pirates Cove, Jean Lafitte and Barantia Bay loops and the outside of Treasure Cove from 114 through 140. If you desire a Gulf view, then Seven Seas, Port and Dock loops (the front ones) would be your choice but you will be giving up privacy, security (it's right on the Beach road), sewer and I believe these are primarily walk-up sites and cannot be reserved.

We found Royal Cay to be very rough, cramped and quite close to the Railroad tracks. This loop as well as the Gulf front campsites have gravel drives, the rest are paved.

One thing I found very disconcerting is that other than Treasure Cove, there was no fire rings or designated campfire spots in the campsites, although ground fires were allowed in all campsites.

The railroad tracks are a oft mentioned subject, due to the noise, primarily impacting Royal Cay and Treasure Cove. Also note that some of the crossings close to the park are very "humpy"; the directions on the reservation site avoids these and are best to follow.

Also, Gulfport and Biloxi are actually east of the park, not west. US 90 along the Gulf is a very nice drive.

Thank you for the correction. I had my tongue wrapped around my eye teeth and couldn't see what I was saying!

Thank you all for the responses and information!

Very useful - keep them coming as well as if you have any other campgrounds along the gulf coast in MS that you'd recommend.

Thanks!

If you have a National Parks Senior pass, consider Gulf Islands National Seashore in Ocean Springs MS; the Davis Bayou campground. Much smaller campground than Buccaneer and the price is right with the pass: $11 per night.

Gulf Islands National Seashore also has a campground, Fort Pickens, near Pensacola, which I did not find to my liking. But many others give it rave reviews due to its proximity to the beach and Gulf waters.

This is moving you east, away from New Orleans, if that is on your list of places to visit.

In any case, consider going to Pensacola Naval Air Station on Tuesday or Wednesday and catch the Blue Angels practice at 11:30 AM. Get there no later than 10:00 to assure yourself time to drive through security (they stop each car, have your license ready), park and walk to the reviewing area. The Naval Air Museum at the same location as the practice viewing is excellent, as well.

The USS Alabama battleship is also a great destination to visit; located in Mobile.

I saw a billboard for a new private RV park driving to New Orleans last weekend. Reunion Lake RV Resort in Roberts, LA. Check out the website. It has lazy river and swim up bar among other amenities.
There are a couple of Louisiana state parks outside New Orleans and on east side of Lake Ponchatrain but I've never stayed at them.
There is also casino RV camping at Silver Slipper in Waveland, Hollywood in Bay St Louis, And Boomtowm in Biloxi.

The best place to stay if you intend to visit the battleship is Meaher State Park. It's on US90 in Spanish Fort, AL, and is just a few miles away from the battleship, which is also on US90.

There are some excellent seafood restaurants on US90 in between Meaher State Park and the USS Alabama, too.

Bayou Segnette State Park, Westwego, LA (a New Orleans suburb). The Louisiana Airstream Club (Unit #50, WBCCI) is holding its Christmas Rally there right now.

Buccaneer is great if...
You get on the outside of one of the loops.
The inside of the loops is really cramped and tight.
The very last/back loop seems the best.
The proximity to tourist attractions and the shuttle bus that runs to Old Town Bay St. Louis is awesome.
The very large swimming pool is great, too.
