Bicycles and the Bambi
We have been enjoying our 19' Bambi 2004 since December. Our towing vehicle is a 97 Suburban. The problem is how to transport our bicycles. The rear clearance between the Bambi and the Burb does not accommadate three bikes. A roof rack is too difficult to access. The best solution so far is to pack the bikes in the back of the burb with the 3rd seat removed. Has anyone transported bikes inside the Bambi? Has anyone attached a bike rake to a Bambi?
Thanks, Carol from Miami

How about a bike rack attached to the front of the 'burb. I've seen some that looked good, some not so good. It would also reduce visibility a small amount, but you would always know if they get loose. Good Luck! David

Putting any extra weight on the rear of an Airstream, such as a bike rack, is not recommended. Since you have a (relatively) small, lightweight trailer, you may want to look at a combination hitch head/bike rack for the "burb. It will put the tongue weight further back, but it is not a sovereign, so it may work.
You can also mount a front rack on the tow vehicle, or maybe even place the bikes in the trailer. If you are worried about grease and dirt from them, an old blanket will protect the inside. We regularly haul two adult size beach cruiser bikes in our 20' trailer, with no problem.

I wonder if Airstream will get into the "Toy Box" market and make a model that can carry bikes, motorcycles, ATV's etc.

All they need to do is take the 34 foot with slide, replace the slide with barn doors and put industrial flooring with tie downs in the front lounge. The chassis should be able to handle the extra weight without the slide and not need much in the way of modification.
I bet if someone went to the custom products group it could be done.

Install a standard 2" towing receiver on the front end of the 'burb. There are many bike racks available that would fit a standard receiver, and you could use them on the back end when not towing.
Another advantage of a receiver on the front end is the ability to manuever a trailer with much greater agility with a ball inserted into the front receiver.
I installed a front ball receiver on all of my previous Pickups. Sure was handy when you needed it. With a front end receiver, any other "extra" you want could be inserted into the front end (cooler carrier, boat lift, wheel chair hoist, etc), and do double duty for the back receiver when necessary. Don't know the serviceability of the engine in the 'burb from ground level, but a "front step" for my Ford Pickups was greatly appreciated.

We have the Airstream approved Fiamma bike rack installed on the rear of both our 19' Bambi and our 23FB. We are very happy with the Fiamma.
The load limit is 75 pounds so it is not going to carry heavy ebikes.

Get some cheap padded moving blankets. They are also good for wedging in anything you place on the floor during travel.

We installed a bumper on our sport 22FB.
We then installed the Airstream approved Fiamma bike rack
We have took the weight measurements before and after.
While traveling we ensure that the heavy tools we keep in the back are moved up front.
this helps a LOT and we can feel the difference
no sway issues in two years now
