axle bars

does anyone know what the flat bars of steel forming sort of a loop pointing down to the ground and connected to the axle do? If I have a flat tire, they will be the first to touch the pavement, and that would be a mighty sparky event! 67 GT 20

They are there on some early single axle trailers to limit the drop if a tire blows and limit damage to the body of the trailer (and also probably limit the steering effect of a blown tire). They are sacrificial and expected to throw sparks if they ever are needed.
