Are you embarrassed by your Airstream?

It's very rare for anyone to inquire about our AS ... except other AS owners. I guess we Canadians are too reserved.

I've only made approximately 5 trips with Ethel, but so far, every time I've had at least two inquiries and tours. The first trip was in a large campground with over 150 sites, so we got a LOT of attention. My wife and I had a conversation about whether or not we were going to need to rehearse a speech. We had 7 people stop and talk to us.

So far, EVERY campground host has stopped by and requested a tour. We figure they must not have seen many Airstreams... they seem to be like unicorns down here.

After all the work I've put into my trailer, I'm more than happy to talk to anyone who'll listen, ha.

We were at "Urban Air" this weekend Eaton Rapids Michigan. This rally was a first of its kind, we parked on MAIN STREET downtown. On Saturday the town was invited to walk through the trailers, about half of the 32 A/S participated. We had over 50 people in ours in 2 hours. Everyone was amazed at the amout of room inside.

I was starting to be embarrassed because people rarely talk to us about ours. This explains it. I must be camping around Canadiens.

We must not look approachable or something. The only people that have ever asked to see ours were Airstreamers. I'm nice and always say to everyone walking by I see. Maybe I should start shaving when we camp. Or they figure I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with my toddler son running around, I couldn't handle visitors.

Place a classic red convertible tow vehicle in front of our shiny '66 Trade Wind and............ We are luv'n it. We take the car to car shows and when allowed are able to show the Airstream with it.

A frequent question at the car/trailer shows is, "Do you travel and camp in your trailer, or just go to shows"? In the campgrounds I am called 'the flag man' because I switch out my 36+ flags each morning.

Not at all. Sometimes we have a chance to join in the fun. Last year we stopped for fuel on our way through the Carolinas and as I pumped the diesel I noticed a fellow driving by very slowly. After he stopped we had the chance to share his memories of camping with his grandparents on the Space Coast when he was younger.

As his memories flowed to the surface we quietly stood by and listened to his pleasure.

Miles down the road Miss K and I were still enjoying his memories.

I haven't even brought mine home from the PO and already people are asking a million questions from my post on Instagram. They'll get to see it this sunday...maybe and then its inside the warehouse for a change of clothes and underwear.

One standard feature of Airstreams is "Conversation Starter"... If you enjoy camping in complete anonymity the shiny aluminum is going to be a problem.. Whether strangers or other Airstreams or fellow campers at a Rally, Airstreams attract attention and lead to conversations.. You have the option to expand and enjoy, or shut it down and avoid, but there is no way to be "invisible" as most owners of white boxes are... Fortunately, I too enjoy talking about ours, and can handle semi-rude questions about cost, since we bought it well used.. It's almost fun watching some folks' faces fall when they realize they too coulda had an Airstream...

The wife and I are planning on possibly buying our AS in feb 2014. We live in Birmingham, AL and I have pondered this question a bit. It matters not to me to be honest, but we have some interesting folks here in AL and I am wondering how my TT will be percieved...say at an Alabama football tail gaiting experience...wondering if it will be viewed as uppity or odd....alls I know is that the it caught my wife's eye in a second and it is rare that toys I want to buy, as does she!!!!

As it relates to the attention it can grab....the wife and I were batting around the idea of a TT....we figured it could be a great source of fun for our growing family and were discussing it with a couple we are great friends with. She suggested AS and after googling really quick, I recall some photos of these and was just amazed....

Now I cannot talk my wife into anything else....I suggested that we may start out with an SOB that is a bit cheaper for starters....she is entirely dis-interested.

We keep our baby in front of the house. That means when I am out washing it, or we are loading or unloading, all the people who walk by (our street is a favorite of walkers), always stop to ask questions. The only question I don't like is, "How much did this cost?" I try first with, "Well, they're a bit expensive." But that often doesn't work - they want to know really how much. I am not comfortable talking about what I spend with friends, let alone passers by. The few times they work the number out of me they are shocked.

I generally don't mind the other questions and interest, and I will gladly open the door and let them peer inside. No tours though unless I actually know a person.

The brand has an excellent reputation among non-RV people in general. A common comment - unsolicited is: "These are the best there is, aren't they!"

My favorite 'embarassing moment'. if it's such. was when fueling our '71 Buick convertible (always a comment starter) up at a gas station with the '66 Trade Wind in tow a suited gent suddenly swerved his luxery car up along side of me. "Excuse, me", he began, "What year is it"? I proudly replied, "It's a '71 Buick Cen......"....."No, no, the Airstream"? he interrupted. I thought....old American iron has been upstaged by old American aluminum.
