I bought Anthony Edwards' Airstream
I bought Anthony Edwards' Airstream
I didn't buy it in the original auction, but I bought it a few years later and when it was a little more used and a little more tired of sitting around. I think the original purchaser must have fallen through or something. There was a polo shirt inside signed over to Anthony by some race car team, so I am guessing they were using the trailer for a while. (I still have the shirt if you want it Anthony--brand new, in the wrapper.) Cure Autism Now did receive all the proceeds when I purchased the trailer.
I bought the trailer sight-unseen, when I had just returned from a tour in Iraq and didn't have anywhere in particular I wanted to live. I had a tire company install new tires on it, and then had a professional hauling company bring it to Colorado, where I was at the time. When I received it, the front skylight was missing. It needed the floor tiles replaced because they were popping up. I also had to tack some of the headliner and trim back up and install some curtains. With a little elbow grease I started fixing it up, and moved in.
Later I had it hauled to an RV shop and had it inspected, I had to replace the brakes, update the gas lines, valves and tanks, and replace the slightly leaky water pump. But overall, most systems were working. The fact that it was completely gutted and then custom rebuilt makes some of it's systems a bit puzzling to me, a first-time Airstream owner. But nothing seems to far out of the ordinary after a bit of investigation. It is a beautiful trailer. I love that it is natural pine and very open, with clean, simple lines. The wraparound couch is awesome. (See photo.) I need to refinish some of the wood work and replace some trim, but after that, it will be great.
When it was converted to an office trailer, the shower and wardrobe were removed. Having no shower was a bit inconvenient when I first bought the trailer and was living in it. In the future I will use it as an office. I find it is actually too big for camping (I would be perfectly cozy in an 18' trailer). But the timing and price were right, so now I have a big, unique trailer, with an interesting story.
I feel very fortunate to have come across this trailer and, of course, was instantly an Airstream lover. There is not much that I want or need to change in this trailer except to update the electrical system a bit. New inverter, add some solar panels, and maybe replace my fridge -- which just doesn't seem to want to stay on electric mode, even when I am plugged in.
Thanks to Mr. Edwards, and Cure Autism Now!
