Alluminitus Interruptus II

Well, it happened before for different reasons, but I'm not going to be towing for a while: a young woman in a Honda Civic rear-ended my tow vehicle. Everyone is OK, no injuries, and damage was much worse for her car. Thankfully, the insurance companies handled things well and quickly.

But guess which sub-system on my SUV took all the damage? Yep, the hitch. The receiver, 7 pin connector, and whole bumper assembly took the impact. That's a good thing for impact protection, but the whole kit that I had shipped over special and installed while we were overseas, will need replacement.

Of course, there's a longer supply chain to get parts for these "dadburned 'forrin cars." So, it will be a couple of weeks total, between sourcing and repairing.

So now, in a big Chrysler 300 Hemi rental car, I start wondering how such 'American Iron' sedans can tow?

Is the one you got from overseas different from one available here in the states?

Ouch! Hate when that happens. Always good to have a back-up tow vehicle.

No, it's the same hitch. BMW only has two towing setups I know of: the US type and the European type. I just wanted to be ready to tow in the US as soon as we came home!

Of course, there are several aftermarket hitches available, and some folks like the more hidden style, compared to the factory version.

Closing out this story: I got the TV back from the body shop, and the hitch and bumper replacement are identical to the previous setup. There was some discussion by the shop foreman that the new hitch didn't require notching the bumper, but the somewhat ugly large rectangular notch remains.

After a previous towing module (computer firmware) upgrade problem, a known BMW "bug" which kept the trailer brake lights from working , and some other minor electrical glitches, I was worried what might happen next.

Fortunately, when I attached the umbilical to the replacement 7 pin connection, all the lights/signals responded normally. Whew.
