Two bad they destroyed it for another reason, too. It appears to have been a custom trailer of some sort. Airstreams generally have large windows on the left front (usually near the front goucho or dinette). This one had a small window there (next to a bathroon or kitchen?).

I'd guess this trailer as the '54 to '57 Cruiser or Overlander (or Romany?) because of the 13-panel end caps and the sloped rear end. Of course it is Ohio built, because it desn't have a whale tail.

It's a sad day when an Airstream dies, especially if it is a vintage unit.

I saw those on e-bay a while back, also had Airstream bird feeders.

What are they asking for it? Is there a premium because Paris Hilton lived in it?

I did not ask. I only noticed it because it had huge graphics on it, depicting the tv show. The inside had a Texas motif, and was so/so in condition.

Not a movie, but the TV show Quantum Leap used Airstreams in several episodes. One that occurs to me off the top of my head is when Sam is the trapeze artist - he has one, his sister has one, and his father has one, and all three are in a caravan in one scene. Of course, Q-Leap dealt with going back in time, so all of the trailers are of the era when that episode occurs.

Many of the interior scenes that I remember were shot on a set, though, unless some Airstreams are square inside and rounded outside...

Not an airstream but cute anyway. The DIY show "BARKITECTURE" built a teardrop dog house.

Looks like a whale tail to me.

Saw this show, too. Was relatively simple to make. I'm trying to figure out how hard it would be to build the ribs to make the curved panels for an Airstream.

Did you notice any big dents in it? I had read somewhere that Paris had dented it up.

I remember someone here mentioned seeing a pink Chevy pickup towing an Airstream a while back. Evidently there were dents in the rear from having backed into something at some point.

I also remember the spotter saying they were going WAY too fast... Seems like it was at some point after SL2 was in the can...

Cutting the ribs out of plywood would be easy enough but how would you make the end caps? I don't know much about the construction of early Airstreams but I think that the end cap segments may each be flat to make the final contour. I know that now they stretch form them over a big jig using enormous pulling tension to make the compound shapes. I saw an old Avion the other day and the flat segments making up the end caps were very obvious.

I'm not a dog person but I love the idea. I'm going to keep thinking....

Steve

thank you so much for this URL! i'm working on an adirondak/western/laplander (yes, they really do go together) type feel in our AS. don't think we'll have real stickley furniture and wood on the ceiling!

i already have pendleton blankets, indian style woven rug, and some rustic furniture. some day i'll figure out what to do with the bathroom. the orange and yellow hippie type flowers won't blend.

any ideas on this problem would be appreciated.

as for the "famous" airstream owners.. i *think* it was in the summer issue of Airstream Life that there was an article on AS owners on hollywoods back lots, etc. one studio has an AS shop to take care of them all. tom hanks and the like find them better for their on site trailers. tom hanks has his washed and polished THREE times a week. we'll be lucky to get it done one. naturally i can't find this issue to verify.

think MTV also has an AS as part of a set. or did.. i don't check them out. no pink floyd, neil young, the doors, etc.

e (and Robert)

This may well be somewhere in this post, but watching Raising Arizona today and there is what looks like a 70's Sovereign in the same area as the trailer. You can see it right after Glen comes to the trailer asking for Nath'n Jr.

My brother is one of the background campers in the campground where Robin fights off a raccoon and ultimately his MH goes into the river (Milk River in Southern Alberta just a few miles north of the US Border). My brothers trailer was to be one of the units at the campground but they wanted trailers 15 years and older and although his is an early 80's, his reputation for being Mister Clean - (wash and wax it every time you tow it and again if you are bored at your campsite - and what was that did we just tow past a car/trailer wash on our way through this little town, we'd better check it out) - had his trailer a wee bit too shiny in comparison to his buddies units and to quote the set manager, it stuck out like a sore thumb. He took a LOT of ribbing from his fellow campers. None of the film crew wanted to "dirty" it up enough to make it look it's age feeling guilty that someone who took so much pride of ownership would not be too happy with what they would need to do to it, so he only got three days of trailer use (still almost a grand). He did the fill-in thing as a camper extra. Said the food was great, Robin Williams is a very nice person, and he still made some extra loot while on holidays to buy a Honda generator. Guess I'd better go see it. heh, heh, poor Tom. He still gets ribbed about that one.
