Passed this beauty today on I-24 east bound near Paducah, KY at 2:30pm. Looked great. Made me wish I could have had ours out this weekend
Passed a late model a few minutes later with TX plates being towed by a gray F-150.

just returned from a trip to Port Canaveral, FL...the winter migration is in full swing...saw only 2 Airstreams (both headed south)...both sighted between Macon and Atlanta on I-75

There is a trailer hitch with a ball, and wheels under that Airstream. What's up with that?

Looks like it is set up to double tow- against the advice of 99.99% of owners-
The caster wheels I assume are to prevent bottoming out-

I have seen people pulling another small trailer behind their camper, usually to transport their golf cart on. And the wheels under the back bumper were probably put there to keep the bumper from hitting the ground when pulling in or out of parking areas.

I am curious to know what happens in an emergency stopping situation when someone has a golf cart and trailer with a combined weight of at least 1000 lbs….in tandem…..

I thought the same thing. I hope this owner is a Forum member. I'd like to know if they double tow.
I've read some discussions on using casters if the angle of departure is too much, to prevent bottoming out. But that is a short trailer. He must have a driveway like mine.
I even refrain from carrying bicycles on my back bumper, even though the spare tire was sometimes mounted on the back of the vintage trailers of the 50's & 60's.
Should I not worry about that and put a bike rack on the back?

There is a bike rack you can buy now that mainly weight is on the frame and it seems good
I read on this forum that those wheels are a terrible idea - I backed into a spot at Vogel state park this year and just barely cleared without rubbing the rear - if I had wheels it would have pushed up on the airstream and who knows what that would do - consensus is argent on this forum is that you are better to risk dragging than to effectively lower your clearance - but I have no idea honestly - I for now will not do the wheels given my own personal experience
Tandem seems like an overall bad ideal

I once "saw" an AS pull into Bull Shoals State Park that had a 12 foot aluminum johnboat trailering off the back of the AS. I asked the guy about it and he looked at me like I was some kind of idiot for suggesting that towing on the bumper of AS might not be a great idea......
now, back to ACTUAL sightings....

Have been pulling doubles since the seventy's , from tractor trailers to travel trailers with whatever type of trailer that meets the need at the time , including many times in the mountains of Colorado , Wyoming , Utah etc. even on ice and snow in the winter. If done correctly , there is absolutely no problem whatsoever with it . With a little practice , one can back double trailers when the need arises . I certainly have a trailer hitch receiver on our present Safari and a couple of trailers that would tag right along behind it should the need arise .
Regards

That ain't the point-
The frame is not strong enough and any weight/pressure back there will cause rear end or floor to shell separation.
The from doesn't really hold the shell up. The monocoque shell/fuselage holds the frame up-
Other travel trailers or fifth wheels- no problem- the frame is the strongest part of those types of trailers.

The frame under the 2005 was as strong as a wet noodle and would not even hold the AS up much less anything else , That's why I rebuilt it . Is no longer a P.O.S.

One thing that most do not know on here and it is not talked about is that Airstream is owned by Thor industries, AS does not have a CEO, it has heads of dept, all of them work at Thor. Since Thor has purchased AS they have cheapened the product to make Thor product line better and is one of the reasons motor coaches are no longer produced by AS. I have watched AS go down hill like the rest of you and I often wonder how long before Thor makes AS so terrible that no one will ever buy one and thus closing AS out forever. Thor knows that AS has a following, and they know of this site and wish that it would disappear because of the knowledge on here and that came direct from Thor in one of my heated discussions over AS. I wish that I was in a position financially and of little younger age, I would re-open Avion or silver streak and reproduce the quality of product that old Wally envisioned with updated materials. I am currently on my 3 rd AS ownership and as much as I love my AS especially the Legend that I currently have, I am getting at the point of going to an SOB and most likely it will be a MH, but not a thor junk.

That is 100 % correct Sarge . Whenever someone comes up to us on the road or at a campsite and start drooling about what a great looking trailer we have , I suggest they look underneath at all the work that it took to get it to the point that it was useable , and point to the Thor sticker by the door and firmly suggest that if an Airstream has this sticker on it , do not walk , but run away from it as fast as you can . Old Wally is spinning in his grave .

First thing I did was peel off the Thor sticker. That improved the resale value, right?
